The Berlin Wall, originally built to keep people in East Germany, ultimately became the ultimate symbol of communism's failure. This transformation from a tool of control to a symbol of ideological defeat demonstrates how political structures can paradoxically become evidence of their own inadequacy.

Why the Berlin Wall was built in one night. On the night of August 13th, 1961, the people of Berlin went to sleep in one city and woke up divided by barbed wire. For years, East Germany had been losing its citizens to the West. More than 3 million people had escaped through Berlin, including doctors, engineers, and teachers. East German leader Walter Ulbricht feared that if the exodus continued, his communist state would collapse. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev calculated that the United States and its allies would protest, but they would not risk a nuclear war to stop him. So, in a single night, soldiers sealed the border and began building what would become the Berlin Wall. Streets were cut in half, families were separated, and a city became the front line of the Cold War.
But this wall, built to keep people in, would one day become the ultimate symbol of communism's failure. In part two, one mistaken announcement will bring it all crashing down.
