Herbert Hoover almost didn't make it out of infancy. Declared dead as a toddler in Iowa before his uncle revived him. Orphaned by nine. Worked his way into Stanford's first graduating class, became a globe-trotting mining engineer, and built a fortune across four continents entirely on his own. Then World War I hit and Hoover pivoted completely. He organized the evacuation of over 100,000 Americans from Europe, fed more than 9 million civilians in Belgium and France, and later directed relief efforts that reached famine-stricken Russia — famously declaring "twenty million people are starving, they must be fed." By the 1920s he was Secretary of Commerce and one of the most admired men on earth. In 1928 he won the presidency in a landslide. Then the stock market crashed. Unemployment soared, shantytowns were named Hoovervilles, and in 1932 he ordered troops to drive World War I veterans out of Washington at gunpoint. He lost to FDR in a second landslide. The Hoover Dam still carries his name and powers millions of homes today.
