Non-compete agreements, originally designed to protect executives with access to trade secrets, have expanded to cover approximately 30 million American workers across various low-wage occupations, sparking debate between those who argue they protect business investments and those who contend they restrict worker mobility and trap employees in low-paying jobs; in 2024, the FTC attempted to ban most non-competes nationwide, but a federal judge blocked the rule before it could take effect, leaving the legal battle ongoing.

The Non-Compete Followed Them HomeIndexed:
The Non-Compete Followed Them Home Non-compete agreements expanded far beyond executives into low-wage hourly jobs across the United States. A 2024 FTC attempt to ban most non-competes was blocked in federal court and remains tied up in litigation. non-compete agreements, FTC non-compete ban, worker rights America, labor law noncompete, Jimmy Johns non compete, employment restrictions, federal trade commission labor, low wage workers contracts, labor mobility, Off Limits America #NonCompete #WorkerRights #LaborLaw #FTC #OffLimitsAmerica
Non-compete agreements were originally designed for executives and employees with access to sensitive trade secrets.
The idea was simple. If someone left a company, they couldn't immediately take confidential information to a direct competitor. But over time, non-competes spread far beyond corporate boardrooms.
Sandwich shop workers, dog groomers, warehouse employees, security guards, hourly workers with little or no access to proprietary information. Some agreements restricted workers from taking similar jobs nearby for months or even years after leaving.
Critics argued the contracts trapped workers in low-paying jobs by limiting their ability to switch employers freely.
Supporters said non-competes protected business investments and customer relationships.
The Federal Trade Commission later estimated that roughly 30 million American workers were covered by some form of non-compete agreement. In 2024, the FTC voted to ban most non-competes nationwide.
But a federal judge blocked the rule before it could take effect. The legal fight is still ongoing.
Meanwhile, many workers remain bound by agreements they may not have fully understood when they signed them. And for a lot of Americans, the bigger realization was strange. Some low-wage workers were being restricted like corporate executives. All for jobs paying barely above minimum wage. Follow Off Limits America. We show you the system. You decide what it means.
