[00:00:24]>> The only thing she doesn't have is early skin cancer. That's the next stage.

[00:00:28]Some would say Janice is beyond help, but Nikki Hamilton Jones and her team will use every trick in the book to restore the bloom to this sunripened has been for 25 years. Glaswegian Janice Despard slugged it out with the harsh South African sun when at the age of 8, she immigrated with her parents and a life of sun worship began.

[00:00:54]>> You know, the sun's killing you, but you don't care.

[00:00:59]You'd think the damage would have stopped when she came back to Glasgow, but apparently her hometown is famous for being the sunbed capital of Britain.

[00:01:07]>> Sunbeats take the toll, you know. She loves the sun beats.

[00:01:12]>> Janice is a live now, pay later kind of girl.

[00:01:15]>> It makes you happy. Makes you feel good afterwards. I come out of there and I feel Yeah, I feel nice and warm and happy because I'm now getting nice and brown. And after a feel-good session on the sunbed, Janice likes to light up.

[00:01:29]Yep. 30 a day for the last 30 years.

[00:01:33]>> I hate my face. I hate the lines.

[00:01:36]Hit the bags into my eyes. My chicken neck. Everyone's just aged so much.

[00:01:41]That's these big lines around my mouth.

[00:01:44]>> It's a horrible smoker's mouth. Um, and I know she hates it.

[00:01:49]>> Janice has been a very bad girl, but all attempts to put things right seem futile. Uplifting cream. Yeah, tried that. Younger for longer. Time releasleasing. Soft and smooth and firming gels. Face peels. None of these are working. You think maybe the next one you're getting, this is it. This one's going to help. This one's going to work. But nah, >> it's not that Janice is resistant to shaking things up. Now her two children are older. She's enrolled in a 7-year architecture course at university. I've got all the energy and all the the go and I'm prepared for all the hard work at the university. That's what I'm so looking forward to doing.

[00:02:29]But my face, you see, it just I feel it lets me down. I Nikki's mission is to turn Janice from a permit throwback to a self- assured mature student who fits right into university life.

[00:02:45]We've decided to parade Janice on her new campus and find out from her peers just how mature they think this student is.

[00:02:57]>> I think about 52. The wrinkles are in really deep set wrinkles around the eyes.

[00:03:01]>> I would have to go with 59 just because I think there are a lot of wrinkles on her face.

[00:03:07]>> I think she's about 54. Perhaps she's been the sun a we bit. She's got a few wrinkles. Their guesses ranged from a polite 43 to a spiteful 66.

[00:03:18]This is going to do nothing for Janice's self-confidence. The average comes out at 55.

[00:03:24]If there's bad news to be broken, Nikki's the girl to break it. Be gentle, Nikki.

[00:03:30]>> Janice, I hear your pole was a little close to home.

[00:03:33]>> Very close to home.

[00:03:35]>> Tell me, how did it go? How did it feel?

[00:03:36]To be honest, it felt awful cuz I was standing there amongst all the youngsters. I really felt old.

[00:03:44]>> I'd say she was about 52, 53. Um cuz my mom's about 40 and she's got a lot more lines than my mom has.

[00:03:50]>> I think she's around 65.

[00:03:53]>> I think around 52, 53.

[00:03:56]>> But I'd say she's in her 60s.

[00:03:57]>> Yeah, perhaps about um 65.

[00:04:00]>> How was that?

[00:04:02]>> I expected them to say in my 50s. Yeah, cuz that's what I see when I look in the mirror.

[00:04:09]>> Um, it's 60s though.

[00:04:11]>> So, Janice, watching that poll, what do you think your age came out as?

[00:04:16]>> Probably about 55, 56.

[00:04:20]>> Well, your average age from that poll is 55.

[00:04:25]>> 55.

[00:04:27]>> Tell me your real age.

[00:04:29]>> I'm 45.

[00:04:30]>> 45?

[00:04:31]>> Yeah.

[00:04:31]>> No way.

[00:04:32]>> Yeah. But we've got some fabulous experts lined up who I have no doubt will be able to work wonders with you because you know you are a naturally attractive woman.

[00:04:41]>> And if it wasn't for the lines on your face, you look stunning.

[00:04:44]>> When you zoom in close, it's easy to see why those students got it so badly wrong. Worshiping the sun flaps the first commandment. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Those seductive rays might have delivered a golden tan.

[00:04:57]But her face is more burnt to a crisp than sun-kissed. Around the [ __ ] damaged mouth, the lines have ganged up to form pleats. But at least the pleats hide the graying teeth. Janice has bleached her hair to high heaven over the years. And in spite of spending hours styling it, she still ends up looking like Wendy Miller's older sister. At least Janice's personal style has that studenty feel about it, consisting, as it does, of jeans. Jeans. Oh, and look, jeans. Taken as a whole, it's a dispiriting picture.

[00:05:31]But on the bright side, the only way is up. And there are plenty of shiny examples out there of how to survive at 45.

[00:06:01]But now Janice needs help with the practical work. This student of architecture is going to have assistance from three of the best. Surgeon Yan Stannick will be chipping away that aging facade. Hairdresser Andrew Barton's responsible for reaching And dentist Serenda Hundle will restore the stone. And she wants the job done and dusted for the start of term in just 8 weeks time.

[00:06:26]>> Yeah. And you are looking at a lifetime of sun damage and smoking. What do you think has been the most damaging factor to Janice's face?

[00:06:34]>> She has all the signs of sun damage. I mean, she's got patchy pigmentation.

[00:06:38]She's got all these little brown spots everywhere, right? Um the other thing is that she does have very rough skin.

[00:06:46]Obviously the skin has lost for her age skin has lost a lot of elasticity. I mean the only thing she doesn't have is early skin cancers. That's the only thing that's the next stage you know five or 10 years later we start you start developing cancers.

[00:07:00]>> Wow. Janice, how does that make you feel?

[00:07:03]>> Frightened. Yeah.

[00:07:04]>> So Yan, what is the solution?

[00:07:07]>> The first thing obviously is prevention.

[00:07:08]So she mustn't um expose herself to direct sunlight.

[00:07:12]>> Does that include sunbeds?

[00:07:14]>> That sunbeds? Absolutely.

[00:07:17]>> So I can never go in the sun again.

[00:07:18]>> No, not at all. No, I think I think it would be crazy to do that. Chemical peel is very very good for this for this particular situation. She has very very deep wrinkles and I don't think the peel would actually get rid of them all. So we might have to use laser to resurface just the upper lip. She has baggy eyes, so we would take some of the skin away.

[00:07:43]Then, of course, she has a lot of sagging in the face. So, what we would do is just tighten up those features, especially around the jawline.

[00:07:52]>> Meet Janice.

[00:07:53]>> Wow. Janice. Wow. WOW. THIS IS WILD.

[00:07:59]>> Janice has a lot of phobias about with hairdressers, don't you?

[00:08:02]>> Petrified of hairdressers. I don't.

[00:08:04]>> Yeah.

[00:08:05]>> Why don't you trust them, Jan? Because when I ask them to take that much off, they take that much off.

[00:08:09]>> Well, a lot of hairdressers treat curly hair like they do straight hair and it shouldn't be treated that way.

[00:08:13]>> Do you think it's aging her?

[00:08:15]>> Yes. It's It's just ridiculous. I think it looks a bit like a fright wig. I mean, I I don't want to chop it off.

[00:08:23]Let's not chop it off.

[00:08:24]>> No, I like the >> But let me show you how to work with this curl. I mean, you've got some great curl there.

[00:08:31]>> Do you trust him? I need to know now.

[00:08:32]>> Yes. Okay, I'll trust him.

[00:08:35]I will trust you. Didn't you leave it long?

[00:08:38]>> Serena, Janice seems to have some really good teeth. I mean, do you think they're aging her?

[00:08:42]>> Looking at them, they're quite discolored from tea, coffee, and maybe not getting them cleaned as well as you should do. If you look at the smile and you can see that the teeth almost come in very narrow towards the front and you've got all these areas here which are empty on the sides.

[00:08:54]>> So, what I would do here, I was I would actually broaden your smile to if you smile again, you can see a lot of these dark areas here because your arch is very narrow. So, you've got a lot of room where we can actually build up the teeth and actually fill it. It actually give you more support around your lips as well, and it'll make the smile look a lot prettier.

[00:09:10]>> With a job this big, where do you start?

[00:09:13]Yan's getting the underpinningings sorted with a lower neck lift, eye bag removal, and peel. Surrender's broadening and whitening her smile with ceramic veneers. Andrew will try to produce spun gold from this pile drawer.

[00:09:26]And Nikki's going to have a hack at Janice's doubtful wardrobe.

[00:09:32]She kicks off with some window shopping.

[00:09:35]>> Janice, you've been a window dresser for about 20 years, right? You're obviously a really creative person. You're doing architecture and all these really creative things. So, I thought we'd start off by having a look at some shop windows.

[00:09:45]>> I'm getting a sense for, you know, creatively how you think. I mean, do you think this is a good window?

[00:09:49]>> No, not at all.

[00:09:50]>> Don't you like it's just too plain?

[00:09:53]>> I don't like it's not good.

[00:09:54]>> Oh, I recognize that stuff.

[00:10:01]What? What's wrong?

[00:10:02]>> That's mine. That's my wardrobe.

[00:10:04]>> Is it your wardrobe?

[00:10:05]>> That's it. That's what it consists of.

[00:10:07]Yeah.

[00:10:07]>> Is it for sale?

[00:10:09]>> I hope not.

[00:10:11]>> Cuz that's all I possess.

[00:10:13]>> You're a really creative person. How can you spend your life in black and brown?

[00:10:17]Just really drag you down.

[00:10:18]>> It's just it blends in with everything else. It blends in with everybody.

[00:10:21]Jeans. I mean, it's like my security blanket. Janice, if you're going to be an architect and be creative with your mind, you need to be inspired by the clothes you wear. It all goes together.

[00:10:29]You need to look creative. Look the part. There's no point having a young face and walking around in dreary clothes.

[00:10:35]>> Yeah, >> you're still going to look old.

[00:10:36]>> I know.

[00:10:37]>> Got to get it sorted.

[00:10:38]>> Let's hope Janice has a high pain threshold cuz there's plenty more where that came from.

[00:10:43]>> All I see is boobs.

[00:10:45]>> Reality like in your face.

[00:10:49]>> Janice Despard, a mature student of architecture, has spent most of her 45 years frying. First under the unforgiving rays of the South African sun, then under the still harsher glare of a Glasgow sunbed, and it's crisped her up like a pork scratching. To learn the secret of such impressive crackling, Nikki's got the photos out.

[00:11:11]>> So Janice, how old were you here?

[00:11:14]>> I think about 1920, 21, around about that age.

[00:11:18]>> And so had the bad habits started by this time?

[00:11:21]>> Absolutely. In the sun constantly. I mean, I would spend the whole day in the sun.

[00:11:25]>> What did you use on your skin?

[00:11:27]>> Everything from margarine to car oil.

[00:11:29]>> Margarine?

[00:11:30]>> Yeah.

[00:11:30]>> Margarine? What gave you that idea?

[00:11:32]>> From school, we were at school. We used to take off our bread, our sandwiches at school.

[00:11:36]>> So, you you you've been practically frying yourself since school. So, by this stage, it had been going on for a good almost 10 years.

[00:11:42]>> Let's move on to the next picture.

[00:11:45]>> Yeah.

[00:11:46]>> So, you're 31 here. Look. Yeah. I mean, you you actually look a little bit younger in this photo. You do when you were 21. Whatever it was, you're there.

[00:11:52]The hairstyle >> is this naturally curly? Yeah.

[00:11:56]>> So, this is natural. This is Wow. No perm.

[00:11:58]>> No perms.

[00:11:59]>> Right. Moving on to the next one.

[00:12:01]>> Oh, dear.

[00:12:03]>> How old are we now? A lot older.

[00:12:05]>> Probably about 35 there. Yeah.

[00:12:08]>> So, only four years older than that photo >> to here.

[00:12:10]>> But you look dramatically older here.

[00:12:12]Look at your skin around your face. Were you just lying in the sun non-stop?

[00:12:17]>> Yeah, that was it. around every weekend, every holiday, straight into the sun.

[00:12:22]>> So, moving on to Let's see if it gets any better.

[00:12:27]>> Oh my god, Janice.

[00:12:30]>> This is horrific, this picture.

[00:12:32]>> That was last year.

[00:12:33]>> Very weathered.

[00:12:34]>> Look at your skin. What do you think looking at this picture?

[00:12:38]>> It's like a 60-year-old.

[00:12:41]>> It's like a shriveled prune, isn't it?

[00:12:43]>> Mhm.

[00:12:44]>> And this is almost nearly 30 years of sun damage. That's it.

[00:12:48]>> 30 years of frying your skin in margarine. And finally, so you are how old are you here now?

[00:12:54]>> 45. Yeah.

[00:12:55]>> You're still lying in the sun with the cigarettes.

[00:12:58]>> Oh yes. Yeah.

[00:12:58]>> I just don't understand.

[00:13:00]>> Hit the cigarettes badly. Hit the sunbeds at least three, four times a week.

[00:13:06]>> Three or four times a week.

[00:13:09]>> I've given up smoking, so that's a good thing. Um given up sunbeds, so won't go back in the sun. So, I can see you've still got that sparkle in your eye. Have we got to get the sparkle back in the skin?

[00:13:20]>> Hopefully.

[00:13:20]>> Yes.

[00:13:21]>> The road to restoration begins with a trip to Yan Stanic's clinic with sister-in-law Lorraine.

[00:13:27]>> Doing fine. I'm not nervous at all.

[00:13:29]>> Morning. You doing?

[00:13:30]>> Yeah, good.

[00:13:32]>> I'm quite calm, relaxed. Yeah.

[00:13:35]>> Lorraine is more nervous than me. She's taken all the nails from me.

[00:13:41]>> Yeah.

[00:13:43]Yan arrives with the paperwork. Despite Lorraine's reservations, Janice has considered all the options and decided to go ahead.

[00:13:51]>> A few quick picks for the before file and Janice is off for her date with Yan's knife.

[00:13:55]>> Oh, my darling.

[00:13:57]>> Okay, see you later.

[00:14:01]>> Over the next 4 hours, Yan's going to try to undo about 30 years of damage.

[00:14:08]He starts with the eyes. UV rays wreak havoc with the collagen in the lids, making the eyes smaller and shrouded.

[00:14:15]Two nips and a tuck each is all it takes to make them big again.

[00:14:20]The lower neck lift will generally underpin the years of facial subsidance.

[00:14:25]But it's the deep wrinkles all over her face that Janice hates the most. And it's easy to see how she got them. A recent study showed that 83% of sunbeds exceeded limits for UV radiation exposure. And in Scotland with the most beds per head, cases of skin cancer have more than tripled in 30 years.

[00:14:44]>> There is this new phenomenon recognized by dermatologists called tanorexia.

[00:14:49]Tanorexia is where uh the person really feels that they must get a tan and maintain a tan at all costs.

[00:14:58]>> And the tan's only the half of it. If you have developed a tan from sunlight or a tanning bed, your skin will swell up a little and as it swells up, it irons out those wrinkles so you look better. So people get addicted to this not only the tanned look but the smoother, more toned look. But what you're actually doing is to deliver more and more damage that will catch up with you in later years.

[00:15:30]The conclusion, every little ray of sunshine should come with a huge health warning.

[00:15:35]>> It's putting you at real risk as regards skin cancers such as melanoma.

[00:15:40]>> Skin cancer affected 70,000 people in the UK last year. With any luck, Yan's ministrations might save Janice from joining their numbers.

[00:15:49]According to the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors, there is evidence to suggest that chemical peeling may help reduce the risk of some types of skin cancer. The reason why people get skin cancer to be very simplistic is that the skin becomes unstable i.e. it produces a lot of abnormal cells and uh peeling seem to stabilize the the the turnover of cells. So therefore you're less likely to get uh a skin cancer.

[00:16:19]4 hours later, Janice's poor, battered face is wrapped up for the night, and she is ever so gently tucked up in bed.

[00:16:29]Janice is taken to her room to rest.

[00:16:34]Early next morning, Lraine's back to see what they've done to her sister-in-law.

[00:16:42]>> Come on, be brave. Am I up too?

[00:16:48]I don't cry.

[00:16:50]>> You look lovely. Wonderful. My girl, >> look at your chin, too.

[00:16:54]>> I know.

[00:16:55]>> Gorgeous. You're going to look like a film star.

[00:16:59]>> The afterare routine is strict. No picking, lots of ointment, and lots of rest.

[00:17:05]>> Down.

[00:17:07]>> Back in Scotland, Lorraine plays nurse.

[00:17:10]>> She wants to fuss over me. She wants to put my creams on and gives me makes sure my medication's on time. And so yeah, it's frustrating for me cuz I'm not used to having to sit and do nothing.

[00:17:21]>> Although doing nothing apparently doesn't preclude a brisk truck around the paddock.

[00:17:26]>> How many times around the garden you want me?

[00:17:28]>> Three times around the garden. Little bit of exercise.

[00:17:33]>> I think she's been so positive through this whole thing, you know.

[00:17:49]Well, that was refreshing.

[00:17:51]>> I can see the difference in myself already and I'm happy with what I'm even seeing now, you know. So, yeah, I can't wait to the end product.

[00:18:02]>> The face might still be looking a bit rough, but that's nothing compared with the state of Janice's wardrobe. This is the bit where Nikki gets savage. You may want to turn away for a moment.

[00:18:12]>> Fantastic.

[00:18:13]So, you live in >> denims. Jeans.

[00:18:17]>> Jeans. So, >> nothing else.

[00:18:19]>> One pair.

[00:18:21]>> Two pairs.

[00:18:22]>> Three pairs.

[00:18:24]>> Four pairs. Five pairs.

[00:18:27]>> Six. There we go.

[00:18:28]>> Six pairs. And seven pairs.

[00:18:31]>> You have seven pairs of jeans. Can you tell me what the difference is between these? Just the the fit and the length probably and one some's got double buttons and >> yeah knowing flashing out double buttons. My god. So to me these are just the wash is just too light and actually the fashion now is much darker almost something like I mean these are quite these aren't too bad. These are great.

[00:18:56]It's a little bit darker and these are fantastic. You know the really dark almost black wash is much more fashionable.

[00:19:03]>> Right. What else do we have? Oh, cropped ones. Yeah. Oh, >> cropped jeans.

[00:19:08]>> Yeah.

[00:19:09]>> So, this is your summer special.

[00:19:11]>> Summer special. One pair of white. Yeah.

[00:19:13]>> And so, then in summer, you'll replace your blues for some cropped white ones.

[00:19:18]And that's it. That's literally the alteration you'll make for the summer wardrobe. Right.

[00:19:23]>> So, one piece of color in this entire wardrobe.

[00:19:27]>> Yeah.

[00:19:28]>> That's it.

[00:19:29]>> Why do you have this piece of color? I just liked the color when I bought it at the time.

[00:19:35]>> Just to see a bit of color cheers me up.

[00:19:37]So, I'd like to see that on >> to you and I it's a green pullover. To Nikki, it's a ray of hope.

[00:19:41]>> It's so much light and fresh and you look you look younger already just being in a bit of color. Let's see what else is in the bag.

[00:19:49]>> You know what I want to see on? I'd love to see these darker jeans on because >> at least these are the probably the most fashionable item you have in your wardrobe.

[00:19:57]>> Yeah. And I like I like the dark ones.

[00:19:59]>> Let's try the dark ones on. Yeah, >> let's put one of your staple brown V-necks on. And hey, let's throw on a cardigan for a bit of fun.

[00:20:07]>> Okay.

[00:20:07]>> What do you see?

[00:20:10]>> Boring.

[00:20:11]>> All I see is boobs.

[00:20:13]They're literally like in your face. You know what it is?

[00:20:17]>> This the V-neck's fine. That's fine. But because the slightly narrower neckline, it does close them in a bit more.

[00:20:23]>> But then you've got this cardigan that literally >> goes outwards at the widest point of your breast. So, it's going like that.

[00:20:30]Mhm.

[00:20:31]>> So, it's creating a sense of, "Oh, they're going out there."

[00:20:34]>> And all this is doing is adding more onto your waist, which is your most self-conscious part.

[00:20:40]>> But these are good. Those are really good. Let's have a look.

[00:20:43]>> We're not going to get you out of your jeans. So, would you mind if I just had an experiment?

[00:20:48]>> I'll try it. Go for it.

[00:20:49]>> And you know, perhaps just let's just try something different on top and see what happens.

[00:20:53]>> No.

[00:20:54]>> The assignment then is to break Janice out of her denim comfort zone. So, what's on the ramps worth trying out?

[00:21:01]Empire lines big and Janice could even keep the jeans underneath, producing something fashionably layered and a little bit forgiving for those who are not size zero.

[00:21:11]Add a bit of streamlining and elongate the look with one of those deep V's that are everywhere this season. And we could be getting somewhere. Back at Style HQ, Nikki's discovering that Janice is a woman who knows her own mind. I >> don't think I'd feel comfortable walking out like this.

[00:21:28]Why don't it just doesn't feel >> I don't know.

[00:21:33]>> It's just getting used to it, Janice.

[00:21:34]Cuz everything you've worn has been baggy and it's been really short and now we're going for something really long.

[00:21:39]And I think the reason this works is that it Can you see how much taller you look? It's really lengthening your body.

[00:21:44]>> Yeah. I don't look as sort of like square.

[00:21:46]>> And I think >> before we've had the line there. Now we've raised the line up here.

[00:21:51]>> And this is actually quite a slim part of your body. So we've really brought the focus again here with the >> V-neck. And um the shape of the fabric really focuses the eye here.

[00:22:01]>> It's one of those spot-on trend garish prints cut to flatter the more robust frame. Janice, what's not to like?

[00:22:10]And you get to keep the jeans. Except worn this way, they're funky rather than frumpy. Look at the boots. Check out the legs. Come on, show a bit of enthusiasm.

[00:22:21]>> The more I look at it, the more I like.

[00:22:22]>> Are you feeling it, Janice?

[00:22:24]>> I feel I'm getting into You see, the thing is, there's nothing essentially wrong with denim, but you have to do it right. And with the cut, width, color, and detailing of your basic jean changing minuteby minute, it's all too easy to make a small but crucial denim error. Paula Reed, style director of Gratzia magazine, is an authority on the meaning of gene. This week's hot look is Kylie in jeans. And this season in particular, that wide-legged high waist has replaced the skinny drain pipe that was so popular last season. This is a perfect early spring look because you're injecting some summer color into your wardrobe, but you still have coverage. And check out that jacket. If you were actually to take that away from her look, you know, her jeans on her t-shirt, it's dressy enough to wear to a wedding, but she slung it over that Matalo top and with her jeans and those very kind of weekendy shoes. brings it back to an everyday wardrobe but with a bit of a kind of special edge. Okay, this is how you get Kylie's look on the high street.

[00:23:21]Um, I want to draw particular attention to this jacket because one way to make a high street item look really expensive and classy is to go for for details like this top stitching. It just looks fantastic. Kylie is showcasing the look of the season in jeans, which is the return of the high waist, which is freaking a lot of women out, me included. mainly because it actually shortens your body. We've all got used to these waistbands sitting on our hips and giving us a lovely long body. And it also highlights your bottom. So a bottom that normally goes like this suddenly looks like it's gone like that. Instead of going here with your waistband, just let it slip to the top of your hipbone.

[00:23:59]And I think you'll still get your on trend effect if that's what you're really going for. And Kylie's actually gone for a kind of chunky wedge with a round toe. This fantastic square quite 70s vibe sunglasses and the big white bag are essential to actually give this a bit of an edge. Jeans can turn from a wardrobe staple, very, very basic piece of clothing into an act a real fashion statement.

[00:24:28]Let's put fashion on the back burner for a bit and talk teeth. Janice has always been reasonably happy with her smile, but in light of the other improvements, the teeth are starting to look shabby.

[00:24:39]>> When my face is brown, my teeth look white. But now my face is white. My teeth kind of look gray. They don't look the same.

[00:24:47]>> Want to?

[00:24:48]>> Yeah, good. You okay?

[00:24:49]>> Serinda's plan is to give her 10 new veneers. Although, it's important to make sure the result doesn't blind oncoming pedestrians.

[00:24:57]>> We don't want to make them too too light because then what will happen? they'll they'll actually stand out even more. So even at the yellow and you feel that they discolored, if you make them too light, it'll go the other way. People say, "Oh my god."

[00:25:08]>> Yeah. So you really do want to keep a happy medium. You're never going to You never want to actually go whiter than the white of your eye.

[00:25:14]>> But as soon as he starts excavating, Surrender discovers it's a bigger job than anticipated.

[00:25:20]>> We knew there was decay in the mouth.

[00:25:22]Yeah. I mean, we really evaluated that from the old fillings because they were they were bad. But at the back on the left hand side, we never knew there was that much decay. It was like it was all the way around the tooth. So when you start removing the outer shell inside it's like just soft. So you have to remove it until you get to firm tooth.

[00:25:39]So those two ended up being crowns.

[00:25:41]Luckily the rest of the teeth are still in good enough shape to fit the veneers.

[00:25:46]After taking impressions, Surrender fixes a bridge of temporary teeth. These will last for the next few weeks and give Janice an idea of the finished look.

[00:25:56]It's one of life's great mysteries.

[00:25:58]Everybody's taught how to look after their teeth. But if we really did, we'd all have Hollywood smiles. So, let's run through it again, shall we? Brush twice a day using small circular motions for 3 minutes. About the length of a James Blunt song. Yeah, that long. Do the tongue as well. It banishes bad breath and feels delightfully stupid. Floss is not just a word that dentists say. It's a necessity. If you want to fight off the falsies, beware acidic food and drink. If you can't resist, it's recommended not to brush for at least 1 hour after, giving your teeth time to recover their mineral content.

[00:26:36]2 weeks later, Janice is back for the final fitting of her tailor-made veneers.

[00:26:42]With good hygiene, these dazzlers should last at least 20 years. Give us a smile, Janice.

[00:27:23]Mature student Janice Despad looks a bit more mature than she'd like. 100 fellow students guessed her age to be 55. Not good when you're 45.

[00:27:35]>> Hours on the operating table and in the dentist chair have started rolling back the years.

[00:27:40]>> It's so much light and fresh and you look so you look younger already just being in a bit of color.

[00:27:45]>> Now's the time to let down your hair, Miss Desp. And oh my god, a touch more ginger and you've got a dead ringer for Mick Hucknull. Emergency crimping for truth, justice, and the side parting.

[00:27:57]Here comes super scissor man Andrew Barton.

[00:28:00]>> Peter, come on. You can do it.

[00:28:04]>> Andrew Jenna spends 5 hours a day trying to style her hair.

[00:28:09]>> Five.

[00:28:10]>> Yep. 5 hours sometimes. Lif.

[00:28:11]>> Well, you know, I'd got a time trying to tame this moth.

[00:28:15]Is there a product out there that she could use to make her life easier?

[00:28:19]>> There is, but I want to know what you use at the moment first.

[00:28:22]>> Moose, that's about it.

[00:28:24]>> Moose, >> don't you think you've got enough volume already?

[00:28:29]>> It's not going to get any bigger. It's very dry. It's very bleached. There is no shape or structure to the hair cut.

[00:28:38]And I think that automatically makes you look old-fashioned and frumpy. What we've got to do is treat each curl individually and cut them quite randomly as well. So they're all slightly different lengths and that'll give you a really beautiful scattering of layers without it looking like a step of drawers.

[00:28:58]>> This desiccated raphia look is essentially the result of years of home highlighting. A darker face with two-tone blonde highlights should at least stop the frizz looking so much of a fire hazard.

[00:29:09]>> So 4 hours of coloring. I could have gone on all day. Let's turn you around and show you in front of the mirror.

[00:29:15]>> You ready?

[00:29:15]>> Yeah, I'm ready.

[00:29:18]>> Oh, that's nice.

[00:29:20]>> That is love. That's lovely.

[00:29:23]>> Yes.

[00:29:26]>> By putting color into your hair, it's adding more color to your skin.

[00:29:29]>> Yeah. I don't even need to put makeup.

[00:29:33]>> Janice has known too many slash and burn hairdressers to be entirely trusting.

[00:29:37]But Andrew's sensitive snips are critically designed to give the curls some much needed structure.

[00:29:47]>> Well, it's going to look completely different to this once it's finished.

[00:29:50]But now all you've got to do is put curling cream.

[00:29:58]>> Not mousse >> ever. Moose >> into your hair. Work it through really well. Just brush it through with your hands into your hair.

[00:30:07]>> When I first started hairdressing, there was only really mousse and gel. Now, there's zillions of products on the high street shelves for styling your hair.

[00:30:15]It's so confusing. There's clays, there's muds, there's waxes, there's pomades. Where the hell do you start?

[00:30:25]If you've got curly hair and want to beat the frizz, use a curl cream and apply it liberally throughout your hair when it's wet. Once you've dried your hair, use a serum and squeeze it into the ends of the hair to help define those beautiful curls.

[00:30:47]If you want smooth, sleek hair, before blow drying, use a protein protective spray to keep the moisture in the hair and help with the blowd drying process.

[00:30:57]After the blow dry is finished, use a shine spray all over the top surface of the hair for a top coat.

[00:31:06]To create volume, use a mousse in your hair whilst the hair is wet before you blow dry and rake it evenly throughout your hair. When you finish blow drying, use a traditional aerosol hairspray all over the hair to hold and fix it in place.

[00:31:28]While Andrew's been cutting, Nikki's been shopping on a mission to release Janice from her denim fixation. Her ultimate ambition, of course, is to get Janice into a dress. Dream on, Nikki.

[00:31:40]This season, appropriate looks have been all over the catwalks, especially the jersey. They're feminine and flirty. But for the uninitiated, a heavier weave will be more forgiving. Those bold black and whites have been everywhere, too, in stripes and swirls that dazzle the eye and thus disguise the odd bump or hammock. And if you're going into color, embrace it with both arms and a leg.

[00:32:03]It's sudden. It's day glow. Too much and you need a long lie down in a darkened room.

[00:32:08]>> You ready, Janice?

[00:32:16]>> Never worn orange before. Can I have a look here?

[00:32:20]>> What are you thinking?

[00:32:23]>> Um, bright.

[00:32:25]It's not a color I would have gone for orange. I wouldn't have even looked at something like this. Just because I've been so stuck.

[00:32:31]>> Orange is a really difficult color to wear. I agree. But because it's not flat against your skin and we've got the white shirt underneath, it actually softens it and it gives you the color that you need for your skin, so you don't have to lie on the beach, lie on that sunbed all the time. But the shape's fantastic because, you know, it's not loose and baggy. It really nips in at the waist and it gives you such a smooth line. I want to show you how lovely the shirt is underneath.

[00:32:56]>> You know, look at the shape on that.

[00:32:57]Yeah, it's beautiful. It's still fitted.

[00:32:59]Still gives you shape, but it's not tight and clingy. And you can actually wear that on its own as well.

[00:33:09]>> And I think you know the trousers look amazing on you.

[00:33:12]>> Trousers. Um >> I mean I've never looked at anything else but denims.

[00:34:03]>> They're not bad, >> but I think it's incredibly flattering, incredibly slimming. We've kept it quite simple. There's not a lot of volume going on. Very fitted, very sleek. And I think that really works to give you a balanced proportions and a slim silhouette. So, I think the tie detail in the belt focuses the eye here >> and I think the V-neck neckline with the embellishment brings the eye here >> here. There's no reason why you can't have a hot date on a Saturday night.

[00:35:39]>> Every season throws up at least one dress that's such a classic, it'll last for years. This jersey frock's a fine example. The sweetheart neckline's alluring without being tarty. [00:37:24]>> So that that's the limitation of it.

[00:37:27]>> And the deeper you go, obviously, it becomes more intense. That that's the problem. And we wanted to go quite deep because of these deep lines.

[00:37:34]>> It's burning now.

[00:37:35]>> Yeah.

[00:37:36]We'll put some we'll put some cream on it and it'll take the discomfort away.

[00:37:41]>> The healing process can take up to a month. And as long as you protect with sunscreen and don't smoke, the results will be longlasting.

[00:37:48]>> I like what I see now. I'm enjoying looking in the mirror. Now I just look at my face. Um, I like it. I like to look at my eyes. I like to look at my complexion. It's nice. I'm happy to think that I used to think that was looking good.

[00:38:30]A certain kind of celeb is rarely seen without the perma tan achieved with sprays or creams to bring that amber glow that teams so well with the red carpet. But it's a look civilians should approach with caution.

[00:38:43]>> I don't want a fake tan because I've tried the fake tan thing before and I didn't enjoy it. I couldn't wait to get home to take it all off.

[00:38:48]>> On some people works beautifully. Some people it turns orange. Some people doesn't do anything >> and you can't control. So that's a difficult thing. I'm going to experiment with a tinted moisturizer on half side of your face and use some bronzing powders on the other and see which effect you like better.

[00:39:05]>> Yeah, sounds great.

[00:39:07]>> First up, tinted moisturizer.

[00:39:09]>> Let's take a little bit and do it on one side of your face.

[00:39:14]>> A tinted moisturizer with SPF will fake a tan while simultaneously blocking anything that could cause a real tan.

[00:39:20]You unravel the ironies. It'll also moisturize. If your skin is greasy, go for an oil-free product. You don't need that much.

[00:39:28]>> Rubia tinted moisturizer is simply depositing color on the skin. It's not going to change your existing skin's color. So, it's really safe to use and you wash it off at the end of the day and you're back to basics.

[00:39:38]>> Now, the bronzing powder. This should be applied with a clean wide brush focusing on the points of the face where the sunlight hits. Avoid the eyebrows and hairline.

[00:39:48]>> And I personally think the bronzers look better on you.

[00:39:52]>> Yeah, I like that as well. And it's easier to do. You can just wipe it all on. Yeah, much easier.

[00:39:58]>> Looks a bit more natural. I don't know why, but it just looks more even and it just looks like it's actually toning in with your skin a bit more.

[00:40:04]>> Okay, Jennice, cuz you like the bronzer effect much better. Let's match it up on the other side.

[00:40:11]>> Keep the look spring fresh, young, and perfect by obeying one simple rule these celebs know very well. Less is more.

[00:40:19]Take it from Jen and Helena. Leave the heavy slap alone. We're serious about this. Just leave it.

[00:41:19]Janice has been hustled out of all her comfort zones and endured a lot of pain to get where she is. Question is, will it be worth the suffering?

[00:41:33]>> Eight weeks ago, Janice Despired was having serious misgivings about fitting in as a mature student. One look in the mirror confirmed that what she'd been using as sun cream for 30 years, margarine, or even worse, engine oil, didn't really work.

[00:41:49]A poll of 100 fellow students put her age at 55, a decade out. So Nikki Hamilton Jones and her team weighed in and kicked off a renovation project to reverse the effects of all those years of neglect and punishment.

But before we get carried away completely, Janice needs to submit herself to public scrutiny again.
