Professional truckers plan their routes and schedules carefully to meet delivery deadlines. This trucker is transporting a 10.5-foot wide barge section from Seattle to California's Sierra Nevada mountains near Truckee. The load requires loading tomorrow morning, driving on Tuesday, delivering Thursday morning, and returning home Thursday afternoon. This demonstrates how truckers coordinate multiple activities within tight timeframes to complete deliveries efficiently.

Hey, I just want you to know I did not put Amy in a gunny sack and sell her to the Canadians. She asked me not to and so I kept her with me.
Good evening driver.
It's 6:00 at night. It's Monday and it's finally time for our ferry. We've been kind of killing time all day.
We had a very busy weekend. We got a lot done. We checked out the entire island and this was the earliest ferry I could get out of here on Monday. I tried. So we had to just kind of kill time today and now we've been parked down here watching them play baseball a little bit.
It's been a fine afternoon. We did a little more walking around town and now I'm going to take the truck. I'm going to go to the ferry terminal. Amy is going to pick me up in Vernon Mary's car and then we're going to go drop it off and walk back to the truck.
So let's go get back on a boat.
My name is Jupiter. I drive a truck.
I own the truck I drive and that's why I called my company Jupiter Trucking.
Join me and I'll take you along on some of the different things I end up doing to make a buck with a truck.
>> [music] >> This is a map of the waterfront of Friday Harbor. Here is where the ferry terminal docks.
>> [music] >> Here is where I need to park the truck to stage it.
Here is where we need to return the car and our plan is to park [music] the truck here. Amy will pick me up and we'll go over and drop the car off in [music] this parking lot and then we'll walk back to the ferry terminal.
>> I'm going the wrong way now.
Uh-huh. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh-ho, I messed up on that one.
My bad. Whoopsie.
Um Well, I don't know if I can. I got to return the car behind me. Is there room on this one?
Okay, I'll try. If I can, I got to run back to the market and return that car over there, but Yeah.
Oh, man, here we go.
>> Wow, all right. That was hectic and unexpected.
First, dumb ass me went down the wrong road, missed it by a block, and then as soon as I pulled up to park, they said, "Do you want to get on this boat? Go now." So, we had to uh ditch Mary's car leave it a block or two away from where we said we would and go right now.
We're on the boat. We're an hour hour and 15-20 minutes earlier than we expected to be.
That was a little hectic at first. Okay.
We're on the boat.
We are on our way. This week's journey is going to start here, obviously.
We're going to load tomorrow morning in Seattle, and we're going to load a 10 and 1/2 ft wide barge section. It's going down to California in the Sierra Nevadas, just a little bit west of Truckee.
We can't deliver that until Thursday morning.
So, we're going to load tomorrow morning, drive, then Wednesday drive, and then Thursday morning we'll deliver, and we'll be home Thursday afternoon.
Going to be pretty relaxing week, pretty easy week, not too difficult.
We're starting off with a bang.
All right, let's get it done.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> There are three or four cars in the back of the ferry that are turned around facing the opposite direction. I do believe the captain's about to back the boat up to a dock and let them get off. Let's walk to the back.
>> [music] [music] >> Just like that, it's done. There's no wasting time with this stuff.
No playing around.
He's turning into an old sailor now.
This ship has a lot fewer cars on it than the one we took over here.
>> [music] >> And just like that, we're done.
Amy, unfortunately, last night came down with something about 24 hours ago and she no feel good. No feel good.
She's lost her voice and she's just been curled up in a ball. So, she asked me if once we got off the ferry, we could get a room for tonight, a nice big bed, hot shower. Steamy hot.
Huh? Steamy hot. S- squeaky squeaky hot.
She want >> Oh, steamy hot. So, it's a steamy hot shower.
And we are in no rush to get home. We have plenty of time to get our load and to get it delivered and still get home on time.
So, I'm going to do this for her.
I'll see you guys tomorrow.
Hey, good morning from Burlington, Washington. Uh we're going to do a little Walmarting.
It's been a few days since we've had any food or stuff in the truck and so we're just going to do a little grocery shopping. It's better than stopping and eating out all the time. We really like to carry stuff with us.
This will get us home. Plus, I discovered I was a little low on oil.
I use Rotella.
$42 at the truck stop for a gallon, $17 at Walmart.
Honestly, Walmart is the cheapest place I've found to buy oil yet, even from oil distributors. Another reason to stop at Wal- Walmart saves the day again. Yay, Walmart.
Now, it was nice to kind of take it easy this morning and Amy's still feeling a little under the weather, but day two of hacking and coughing.
I hope she gets better.
I'm here and I've been told don't get in a hurry. Have fun hanging out.
This is what we're going to get.
This is actually on its side.
>> I don't know if mine will be hollow like that. I mean with a cutout like that or solid square.
There's a whole bunch of them and there's a whole bunch of trucks going out today.
That's good. I've got plenty of time.
Now that would be a hell of a piece of yard art.
Man, man that would be cool for free. I don't want to buy one.
Time to get my nap on.
No, I'm not going to nap but We're here.
Just don't get in a hurry.
>> [cough] >> Here we go.
Piece of cake.
I like loads like this. Just one big unit. Don't worry about parts of it falling off.
Few straps, couple chains.
Piece of cake.
All tied down.
Now this weighs 31,500 lbs.
Half that is So, I really need 16,000 lbs of securement.
Each one of these chains is worth seven.
So, there's 14. I have more on the back.
That's 28.
Each one of these straps is worth 54.
So, let's just call it 10. That's 38.
I have double the securement that I really need on this.
That's why I only have two straps.
Unlike this guy who has about six straps. And the other guys have about six straps.
That's just my math and that's the way I've always done it.
Right or wrong, it's the way it's always worked for me.
Yeah, this guy has two, four, six, seven straps on his.
Yeah, but I have a three-fingered Bones.
What's up, Bones?
You ready to go to the lake?
So, if you look at these, the little knobs on this side actually fit in the holes on this side. This is a locking mechanism that I won't try to demonstrate. Looks like it's bolted down, whatever.
And they all interlock and they make one giant floating barge. I don't know what the unload end of this looks like yet, but it's going to be interesting.
Nice and easy.
You ready?
Mama, I'm ready to go.
Nobody around here speaks English or barely. The guys who work here do. The other truckers don't really.
It's the way it is these days.
So, I was just reading my paperwork and this load is delivering not to where I thought it was, but nearby.
To Lake Spaulding.
The actual address says Nevada City, California.
But it's a long way from Nevada City.
Lake Spaulding is one of our favorite lakes to camp at. It's been many years because they changed the rules, but Lake Spaulding is awesome. We love that place. And now we're going in the big truck. Man, that is a windy little narrow road to get down to the boat ramp area, which is I'm sure where we're going to be unloading this.
Let's go. Buckle up. This is going to be kind of cool.
Well, doing a quick load check here.
Quick potty break at the rest area.
Looks really cool on the truck, I think.
Pretty neat looking.
Poor Amy isn't feeling that great. It's been a hard trip on her. This morning I was a little bit, uh, myself. Wondering if I was something, but I'm not. I'm good.
Knock on wood that I can make it till I get her home.
She's a trooper. She's a keeper.
All right, back on the road. We're going to try to get down to Madras tonight.
Just because I know there's plenty of parking. We have tons of time, but we're going to just go play in the traffic just for the fun of it.
No traffic tomorrow. Just get it all over with today.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Well, we're on San Juan Island this weekend, we learned some pretty interesting history about the place that I had never heard about before. So, I figured I'd share it with you. I studied as much of it as I could and then I went around and found the actual locations where the history took place.
Pretty interesting. I'll share it with you.
In the late 1850s, the border between British territory and United States territory in this area was not clearly defined.
The British thought this island was in their territory and the United States thought the same thing.
In 1859, the Hudson's Bay Trading Company, which is a British company, came over here and set up a sheep farm.
And about the same time, there were miners who had given up on the gold, came over to this island and set up farms.
There was one guy in particular who was a little lazy, they say, and in his late 20s, so yeah.
Uh he actually started a potato farm kind of right in the middle of the area where they had a sheep farm.
He only fenced it on three sides, too.
One of the sheep herders had several pigs who were allowed to run free.
One of these pigs kept getting into the potato patch. And finally, this guy named Lyman Cutler shot and killed the pig.
All right, that pissed everybody off. He offered $10 to pay for the pig, which is about $350 today.
And the guy who owned the pig said, "Nope, I want $100 or $3,500 for the pig." And the other guy said, "Nope."
So, the British came and arrested the American.
And things got a little crazy. The Americans called for backup and soon there were American troops here.
The British saw that and then there were British troops here. And this was almost a war and it's called the Pig War.
There was never a shot fired, nobody was ever killed, there were no casualties.
When Washington D.C. heard about it and the royal crown heard about it, they both said, "Whoa, everybody calm down.
Let's figure this out peacefully." And they decided to both occupy the island at the same time until a resolution could be had. Now, the Americans set up a camp on the south end of the island called American Camp. And the British set up a camp on the north side of the island called British Camp.
In 1872, it was 12 years later before they finally decided that this territory was part of the United States and the British retreated. Now, they were friends. They became friends after being here for so many years. It's said that the biggest threat that they had with each other was the large amounts of alcohol that was available.
They celebrated holidays together. The British celebrated the 4th of July with the United States and the United States soldiers celebrated Queen Victoria's birthday and they did Christmas and all that stuff and they had a great time.
And so, they were really sad when they went apart. But this here, on this island, was the longest border and territorial dispute in the history of the United States.
Now, on the funny part of things, they still have both the American and the British camp. The Americans completely clear-cut the American camp, the south end of the island, so they could see if the British were going to come and invade. And the British didn't do that. Their camp is right down the hill here.
And they still fly the Union Jack above the British camp. That makes this territory one of the very few in the United States where a U.S. government employee, the National Park Service Rangers, actually raise and lower a foreign country's flag every day. It's just done for honorary purposes, but it was pretty unique and it's It's beautiful down here.
It's pretty interesting that it all started over a pig.
Now I need a big t-shirt that says the pig war. I survived the pig war.
Anyway, I wanted to share that with you guys. I want to show you some of the scenery. It's beautiful.
I got Amy and a pig.
When the Royal Marines left in 1872, many of the American officers regretted their British friends' departure.
This was the officers' quarters.
And this building here was just relocated here in 2012.
It was moved in 1872 to downtown Friday Harbor.
And in 2010, they finally did enough research to discover that this was an original American camp building, and they moved it back out here.
Is there really my car on the dirt or pavement? I don't I don't got it.
There's no one driving my car.
Wait. Wait. Wait.
Made it safe and sound. Here, I just want you to know I did not put Amy in a gunny sack and sell her to the Canadians. She asked me not to. I kept her with me. She just doesn't want to be on TV, on camera, nothing like that.
She's recuperating.
We'll leave it at that.
All right, we made it to Madras. We got a great parking spot here. It's one of my one of my go-to places and we're back at it tomorrow.
See you in the morning.
Morning from Madras, Oregon.
Pretty noisy out here.
So uh this morning I was walking around the truck before I left and I apparently last night parked in the garbage end of this lot where uh people have thrown away a lot of stuff like a bumper guard and all their garbage, tires.
But I did see one thing that caught my eye.
That's a bag of tire chains.
Now I have 24 5 tires on this trailer that I just put on here.
And I walked up and by golly, that's my tire size.
Why wouldn't I take it?
Looks like I got some tire chains.
These are 22 5s from when I had the old size tire on here.
I was just going to adjust it, but now it looks like I don't need to.
Wow.
Everybody's looking as good as can be this morning.
Everything on the truck looks good.
We've got about a 7-hour drive to get down to Reno. We're going to stay right outside of Reno tonight.
And then we've got an hour drive, hour and a half in the morning to get to the lake.
So it's going to be a pretty easy day.
Let's go get on it.
>> [music] [music] >> It's been that kind of morning so far.
The wind rocking the truck woke me up this morning and it has been flat out howling. And now it's raining.
I think we're going to run out of it here in a couple hours. We just went through Bend.
They've made a lot of improvements in Bend for traffic flow, but it's still real crowded. But we're south of there now.
Just kind of moving on. Ready for the sun to come back.
>> [music] >> After running the AC for hours yesterday, I had to turn the heater back on.
Well, highway 97 through Oregon, Eastern Oregon, has really become a madhouse.
So, we're going to split off and take the back way.
About the same travel time down into Reno, but it'll be nice and peaceful and very scenic. So, we're entering the Oregon Outback.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> Hey, we've had a slight adjustment to our plans. We were going to stop in Reno tonight and I was going to try to get one of the kids to come pick up Amy and take her home, but we're going to be a little bit early. And by the time the kids could get into town, the traffic would be horrible. So, Amy has agreed to stay with me in the truck one more night.
She's not feeling well. She told me don't look at her, so I'm not looking.
I didn't see that.
Oh, never mind. I won't do that. I won't do that.
But, uh Hello.
Hello.
Hello.
You see, she's still here. And we're going to go all the way to the top of Donner Summit and spend the night at the Donner Summit rest area tonight. I've talked to the crew that's unloading these large pieces.
He said get there at 7:00 in the morning and get off-loaded quickly.
So, that is going to be the plan. Then we're going to turn around and boogie for home.
All right, Vic. Hello. Hey, you're welcome. Thank you. See you. Have a good day. You, too.
They wanted to do an inspection on this real quick at the agricultural inspection station.
But, these things are clean and dry, painted.
No problems.
She was very nice.
And I forgot to mention, we're in California now.
And that's why the agricultural inspection station. California has it.
When it says high-profile vehicles not recommended, that just means, uh, hang on.
When it says prohibited, that's when it's serious and you can't go. You've got to stop. We are going to be just fine. This big old brick on the back of the trailer here does get pushed around by the wind.
Doesn't exactly blow through it. We're going to be just fine.
>> [music] [music] >> So, one thing that I kind of forgot about when I booked this load is that it is road check road blitz week.
Whatever it's called. Where all the inspection stations are doing super duper duty on uh inspection inspecting commercial vehicles. You know the deal.
I've had really good luck over the years. I've never had any problem. The truck's in great shape.
But it's always a little nerve-racking because they can always find something if they want to.
This truck actually hasn't had an inspection in quite a few years. I've rolled through a lot of scales, but I just get the green light.
So fingers crossed that's what happens today.
>> [music] >> That's a green light, folks. Green light.
>> [music] >> Good. How are you? Good. Good. What state did those come from?
Uh Washington, Seattle. Seattle? Were they in the water previously? No, they've all been dried, painted, prepped. They're going to uh big Spalding. Okay.
All right, thank you. Have a You too.
And that's another green light, folks.
We got two green lights.
All right, my work is done here.
>> I just saw the signs as I was pulling down here. I've been here before, but it's been a very long time and it was more American owned back then.
So, I really wasn't sure. I walked up and go ask him and he said it was no problem. Just ignore the sign. So, all right, we'll ignore the sign.
I'm parked over here with my nose up against the bushes and I noticed when I got out of the truck about two steps away was a giant pile of poop.
And I don't know I didn't investigate animal or human and I don't feel like shoveling it, so I'm probably going to move a little bit.
Anyway, it's not the most ideal place, but I'm only about 15 or 20 minutes from my delivery in the morning and I'm positive there's no place else to park between here and there.
So, we're going to deal with it for the night and uh get out of here first thing in the morning. So, all right, we'll see you guys tomorrow.
That's where we're going.
There we go.
That's better.
I don't know, but a couple cones, but that's the life of a road cone.
Yep. All right, took out two, three of them.
What are my brakes are squeaky?
Hey, good morning from Lake Spalding.
We're here.
Apparently, there's two trucks already here.
I got here about 5 minutes early, and there's already two trucks here.
And then there's one that showed up just a minute after me, so there are now four trucks here.
I made it.
Going to make it tight.
>> Morning.
They're going to unload there or we going down the boat ramp?
Right there, we don't have to go down the boat ramp or nothing. Okay.
Got you. Sounds good.
Beautiful Lake Spulding.
I think I mentioned before we've camped here many times.
I talked to one of the guys being a flagger and he said they're going to set up a crane. There's a dam around that point and they're setting up a crane to dredge the dam. Dig all the dirt out. They're going to dig 50 ft of dirt out from behind the dam and this whole lake is closed for the season.
There's the crane.
See if I can't get it from the other side. So yeah, they're going to unload these barge floats and set them right in the water and assemble them in the water.
So, they're having trouble. The thought was they were going to unload them in the parking lot with a loader that's rated for 50,000 lb and these barges weigh about 32. But, this first truck, it won't pick that barge up.
They think it's a heavier, maybe it's got water in it or something.
But, it's rated the paperwork says it weighs 42,000 lb. So, they can't pick it. And he's going to have to back down the boat ramp.
Not sure if the rest of us are going to have to do that. We're not.
Remains to be seen.
There's the boat ramp.
And there's the crane.
I'm going to see if I can't get the drone out. I've got my chains undone.
We're going to move all the trucks and then I'm going to get the drone out.
The guy over here told me that they've got 56 of these barge floats coming and they're not just coming from Seattle, they're also coming from Louisiana and Texas.
So, wow.
We're going to get everything moved up and see if we can't unload these with the loader.
I guess I'll move, too.
Well, no drone. I was getting it out and the guy came up and he goes, "Yeah, we can't do that here. PG&E is super strict." PG&E actually owns this land.
Pacific Gas and Electric is the power company conglomerate, whatever you want to call it, for California. And they own this lake. They built this lake. They put in a hydroelectric dam here back in the '20s or '30s and they own the property and they maintain the dam and and all this. It is their property, so I will not do that. But, I got a camera on my truck. And I didn't sign anything that said I couldn't put it on social media.
So, uh no drone, but we got some pictures.
This was going to be kind of a fun little delivery, and it wasn't. God, people there are stressed out and not happy.
Uh one guy was nice, but I had a lady come up to me. I was wearing tennis shoes. I threw my tennis shoes on this morning, didn't even think about it. And she lost her on me.
"You're supposed to have boots on. You got to get back in the truck." And I was like, "Huh?"
"Get back in the truck." "What Who's going to roll up my straps?" "Someone will have to. This is a construction site. You got to have boots on." I said, "Calm down. Calm down. I got boots. Just calm down."
And I went to put them on, and she came back, and she's like, "Thank you."
And I said, "You could be nice about it." And she comes up to me, and she's like, "I'm sorry.
I'm just stressed. I'm so overwhelmed, and PG&E is standing right here and just breathing down our necks and everything. It's just a madhouse right now, and I'm sorry." So, at least she apologized, but she was not nice about it.
The whole experience just kind of went from, "Hey, this will be fun and cool" to "Just get me out of here." So, I don't know if I need to rate this job site.
Uh if you want to talk about location and getting to it, whatever. I'll just give it a five.
I don't even want to think about it.
We're on the freeway, getting on the freeway right now, and the next to stop is home.
Go home. We need to get Amy out of this truck.
This poor girl is not She seems to be getting worse.
So, let's get her home.
Oh, man, the freeway's closed.
Backed up for miles. I don't know if it was a rockslide or if it's just construction, but they've got a loader scooping rock above the freeway and putting it into a dump truck.
Wow.
Glad I came through here last night.
Holy smokes.
Uh Yeah, it's still road check week.
Uh I guess it's my lucky day.
Again.
And I'm home. It's nice to be home. It really is good to be home. The dogs went crazy when Amy got out of the truck.
They love her. They like me, they love her. So, it was good to see the dogs, see the cats, see everybody, see the kids.
Uh Amy is in the house recuperating.
She didn't really get like a full body sick. She just got a cough, and the cough has been ravaging her. Uh she can't sleep. She's just just coughing up a lung for the last, I don't know, 4 days, 5 days, something like that. So, she's recuperating. She just felt like crap. So, unfortunately, I needed to get her home as soon as possible.
And uh she's in there recovering. So, this was a fun trip. I'm really grateful for the opportunity from Vern and Mary to be able to do this and I look forward to our next one. I don't know what it is yet, but I'm looking forward to it. It's time to do some truck work.
These These are the little plastic spacers that seem to have disappeared off of my truck that's making the squeaking noise that lube lasted, I don't know, a few days, but it's it's back. So, it's maintenance day. I need to service the truck, um, grease it, do this to it, and I've got a couple days to do it. We're going to head back out next week, going back to Seattle.
That's it, guys. I sure appreciate you following along and thank you guys for everything and all the kind words and and all the happy birthday wishes for Amy. That was very nice of you guys.
Thank you and we will see you.
In the meantime, keep the bugs off your glass and the bears off your ass. Catch you on the flip-flop.
