Patients often misinterpret the 93% 30-year survivorship statistic for hip implants, believing they will need a second surgery in 30 years. In reality, only 7% of patients require revision surgery within 30 years, meaning most patients never need a second implant.

Will Your Hip Replacement Wear Out? The Truth About the 30-Year DataAjouté :
Yeah, absolutely. Especially with modern materials. I the thing that I noticed when I tell patients I started quoting that study that came out I think it was Lancet maybe that 93% survival at 30 years.
Even when I say that a lot of my patients say, "So I need another one in 30."
And it And my point is No, only 7% of people in 30 years needed this spectrum. Most people are never going to need a second one.
>> That's also I have such a beef it's with orthopedic research in general as well because we all talk about survivorship and I like survivorship is also a weird thing because so research survivorship means a time certain amount of time has gone by and the implant hasn't needed to be revised. But it says nothing about quality of life nothing that actually matters to patients. So like even that it's like I think there's a paradigm shift happening now in orthopedics where instead of looking at this survivorship thing because a lot of people again if we have things like PNS and stuff now. Let's say it's 20, 30 years down the line you've got a little bit of poly wear it's not perfect and things are wearing out.
You're 82 at this point. You're like not your your life is not that crazy and you're like okay maybe we can do a PNS or you're fine with where you are.
That doesn't really we're missing a lot of the picture here about longevity. For a lot of these patients I think if again if we do it right and we encourage lifestyle changes too and we use modern implants and we have things like PNS and stuff in our arsenal.
Uh I think it's a totally different game. I think most people if really should be if we do it right for the rest of their life. And again I the statistics here 93% so 7% fail.
Missing the point here.
