On the day Eliza left the auction yard behind, she went first to the kitchen.
Rebecca was waiting by the fire.
For a moment, neither woman spoke. Then Eliza took the folded birth cloth from her apron and placed it in Rebecca's hands.
"You kept this for me?" she said.
Rebecca shook her head.
"I kept it until you could keep yourself."
Eliza's eyes filled, but she did not cry.
"What was she like?" she asked.
"Anna?"
Eliza nodded.
Rebecca looked toward the window.
"She was quiet when the house listened, but when she held you, she said your name like it belonged to no one else."
That evening, Milly came running to the kitchen steps.
"Joseph is still here," she said.
Rebecca nodded once, then remember why.
Milly stood taller. because names matter.
Eliza looked out toward the yard where the auction benches were being carried away.
A person could be written into a ledger as property.
A person could be trapped inside a law made to deny her humanity.
But sometimes a name survived in a kitchen, in a witness, in a hidden cloth, in a sentence no family wanted read aloud.
And once that name was spoken before the room that tried to bury it, it could not be buried the same way again.
