In certain genetically susceptible individuals, the immune system may misfire and produce antibodies against MDA5 itself. These autoantibodies can trigger inflammation that damages lung tissue, and this damage can progress rapidly.

Scientists suspect COVID may trigger a rare immune attack that rapidly damages lungs.mp4Added:
Did you know a protein designed to protect you from viruses might [music] in rare cases turn against your own lungs after COVID? [music] And for some patients, that immune reaction can become deadly.
This is anti-MDA5 [music] positive dermatomyositis.
Normally, MDA5 [music] acts like an alarm system. Its job is to detect viral RNA, genetic [music] material from viruses, and trigger antiviral defenses.
But researchers think that in certain genetically susceptible [music] people, this system may misfire.
Instead of only attacking [music] viruses, the immune system starts producing antibodies against MDA5 itself.
These [music] antibodies can trigger inflammation that damages lung tissue, and that damage [music] can progress fast.
Doctors noticed an unusual rising cases during the pandemic. [music] Some patients had confirmed COVID infections, others never knew they were infected at all.
Researchers proposed [music] a possible new syndrome called MIP-C, short for MDA5 autoimmunity and interstitial pneumonitis contemporaneous with [music] COVID.
Patients often first develop symptoms that seem unrelated to the lungs, skin rashes, muscle [music] pain, joint aches.
Then, some rapidly [music] develop severe lung inflammation and scarring.
Scientists also found [music] elevated levels of IL-15, an immune signaling molecule [music] that may amplify inflammation inside lung tissue.
Now, here's the part most [music] people miss.
Researchers have not proven that COVID [music] directly causes this disease.
MIPC is still a proposed syndrome, not an [music] established diagnosis.
And anti-MDA5 dermatomyositis [music] remains extremely rare.
But the findings highlight [music] something important.
Viral infections may sometimes reshape the immune system in [music] unexpected ways. And early diagnosis may be critical when lung symptoms progress [music] quickly.
