"Sky King" serves as a fascinating bridge between frontier mythology and mid-century technological optimism. Its early inclusion of female agency within the aviation-Western hybrid makes it a significant, if nostalgic, cultural artifact.

All right, you two get over there.
>> SKYE, LOOK.
>> WHAT?
>> DOWN THERE. Don't you see? It's a light.
Like a reflection from a mirror.
>> Yes, I see.
>> Do you think that's a signal from Penny Sky?
>> We'll soon find out.
Hi, I'm Rob Ward and I want to thank all of you out there for watching Mike Clark's Sky King documentary. It's been a phenomenal success. So many of you were talking about how you grew up watching it, became pilots, and because the response has been so great and the music videos too. So, thanks for liking them. We thought we would present two more Sky King episodes so that you can get your fix on Sky Penny and Clipper.
So, it's Two Gun Penny with You won't recognize her, but one of the James Bond girls, Jill St. John, is the little girl in Two Gun Penny. That'll be followed by The Sky Robbers. It's an exciting story that involves a bold daytime theft and Sky pursuing the bad guys and bombing their car from the Songbird.
Now, out of the blue of the western sky comes Sky King.
If you want to be a good citizen, you must love your country. And America is so easy to love you. Look, isn't this a beautiful country? Look at this huge angry mountains on the horizon. They come sloping down. And >> Papa, please to keep your hand on the V.
Even in this country, great as it is, the automobile does not steal itself.
>> Sorry, Gr. But for us foreignb born Americans, it's so very difficult to talk without our hands.
>> Papa.
>> Huh? I have the strange feeling someone watches us again.
>> Those two men on horseback were past us when we stopped for gas. Did you see them?
>> I saw no one. I only saw the rocks, the trees, freedom of America, the wonders of God's universe.
>> That is because you look only for the good things, Papa. These two men, they look bad.
>> Oh, great. And we left all the bad men behind us when we came to this country.
Nothing can hurt us here.
>> Greet Grein, are you all right?
>> Yes, but how did it happen?
>> You're right, Gretchen. And the bad men are still after us now. Whatever happens, play dead. Don't crit. They want me, not you. Now do what I ask you.
Play that.
>> Irish M.
You.
>> Yes. Professor Glockman. me >> after all these years. You followed me even here >> to the ends of the earth if it be necessary. Professor, >> you can't harm me anymore. Mar, I am an American citizen.
>> Such disloyalty to your native country.
Professor, I'm afraid we cannot recognize your American citizenship.
No, you still belong to us and we need you very badly. You have no idea how badly. Why a man of such relearn?
Professor, a man who can give us the names of so many traitors who like yourself have worked against us in the past.
>> I tell you nothing.
I think you will.
By nightfall, a plane will have picked us up and taken us from this country of so-called freedom.
>> Soon you will be home, Professor. Your real home, I mean. And then I think you will have a great deal to tell us.
Pull him out, Mr. Blake.
What about the kid? She appears to be unconscious. Poor child. A rather nasty bump.
>> Well, we're going to take her with us.
>> I don't know. The plane that is to pick us up is a small one. No room for extra passengers.
>> Look, the child is hurt. You can't leave her here. Miles from everywhere.
>> Can't I? We leave her here.
She won't remember anything if she wakes up. And even if she does, it will be too late to matter. Come, bring him along.
>> And still the search goes on for Professor Court Glutman, who fled his native lands so that he might better help the free world fight the forces of totalitarianism and who recently became a United States citizen, has made a brilliant record in his new capacity as State Department adviser attached to the United Nations. It is feared that agents of his former homeland, which has long demanded his extradition by the United States, have now taken more violent methods to silence this courageous and forthright >> Hurry up, Clipper.
>> Sky, can I go, too? It's not fair that Clipper should be in on all the excitement, and I'm not.
>> Now, Penny, someone has to stay here and help Jim look after the ranch.
>> But if this Professor Glukeman's as important as they say he is, the more people who look for him, the better. We may be gone longer than I expect, Penny, and I'm not sure the Air Force would approve of a young lady of your tender years going out on a manhunt.
>> Honest to gosh, Penny, this is a man's job. When are you going to learn there's just some things a girl can't do as well as a man?
>> Is that so? Well, I can ride and I can shoot and I can even fly. And that's more than most men can do.
>> And you also wear skirts and and scream at the sight of a mouse. That's something most men don't do.
>> Penny, I'm afraid Clipper is right.
Tracking down international gangsters is a man's job. But a pretty girl like you, she should be happy she don't get mixed up in anything like this.
>> Why most girls would want to stay here with Jim? After all, a woman's place is in the home. Isn't that right, Skye?
>> Well, I'd say a woman's place is wherever she's needed most. If Clipper and I have to bunk overnight with the Air Force, I'm afraid you just wouldn't fit in. Penny, come on, Clipper.
>> Cheer up, Penny. There'll be plenty of other times when you can go along.
>> It's not fair. Women, they just get pushed around. Men want everything.
>> Wait a minute. They only think they do.
It's you females who really pull the strings.
I'm going to drive into town to buy some things. Do you want to go along?
>> No thanks.
>> Well, I'll be back shortly. You won't get lonesome.
>> Will it matter? I'm just a woman. Who cares if a woman gets lonesome?
>> I think you need some fresh air. Why don't you saddle up your horse and drive to the north boundary? See if the fence needs fixing.
>> All right, I'll change my clothes.
Can't do a man's job, can I?
67 82 heightened Wear skirts. Scream at the MS. A woman's place is in the home. Huh?
Just a girl, huh?
I'll show them.
Stick them up.
Reach, I said. All right. Now, get out to that north boundary and inspect the fence.
>> Gee, this is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. The state of Arizona is a pretty big hay stack.
>> Well, do you really think it's any use of hunting for the professor like this?
I mean, >> what other way is there, Clipper? I think the federal authorities have it doped out about right. Professor isn't dead or they'd have found his body by the car. Whoever ambushed him is holding him till they can sneak him out of the country. Probably if night when their plane can fly in and out without being spotted.
>> Yeah, but there's a lot of air strips in Arizona. Some that even you and I don't know about.
>> That's right, Clipper. Those are the ones we're looking for. If we could only find a hint, some clue near any one of them that the professor is being held there.
>> Well, you do think there's a chance of us finding him, don't you, Skye?
>> There's always a chance, Clipper, till it's been proven otherwise.
>> Well, I'm sure Glad Penny isn't along.
If we do find him, there's going to be some rough stuff.
M HELP. PLEASE.
>> What is it? What's the matter?
>> Oh, I'm so glad I found someone. I'm almost giving up hope. You want to help me, mister?
>> Yes, mister.
Oh, I'm sure I'll help you if you will just tell me what it's all about. My father, he's in terrible danger. They're holding him in a carbon bare. They're going to fly away tonight if we do not save him first.
>> Your father, but who?
See, you're not Professor Gluke's daughter.
>> Yes. Yes, that is me.
>> But the radio said they'd taken your bones.
>> No, they leave me for uncautious at the car. So, I run quickly to look for help.
I run and run and I think I find nobody.
And then I am so happy I see a man coming. I see you.
>> Well, you just leave everything to me.
I'll take over now.
>> Oh, poor Papa.
You can ride back fast and get the police. Yes.
>> If they're planning to fly your father out of here real soon, we may not have time for that. But surely surely you would not try to rescue my papa without help.
>> There are other ways of getting help.
The important thing is to be sure that your father's still here by the time help comes.
>> But supposing they try to take him away BEFORE HELP COMES.
>> Then they'll have me to deal with.
>> Oh, that is very brave of you. But you are only one boy and they are two very big men.
>> It's not size that counts. It's brains.
Sometimes one boy can outwit 10 men. Now wait here.
Go home, boy. Go to Jim Bell.
And now let's you and me take a look at that cabin.
KALENO, >> you called Mr. Mara. Any sign of intruders?
>> No, Mr. Mara.
>> Have you seen anyone today?
>> No, Mr. Mara.
>> Good. Get back to your post.
You see, my dear professor, I do not take chances. My dear friend, Mr. Careno, has been on guard all day. I'm afraid any intruder who might find this cabin would receive a very deadly welcome. Mer, I understand why you do what you do. You hate democracy and all that it stands for. Beside, you are always a man without principles and without honor. And I suppose your Mr. Kraeno is just the same. But you, Mr. Blake, I don't understand.
You're an American citizen, aren't you?
And yet you are working for these deadly enemies of your country. I think you are the lowest of all forms of animal life.
Mr. Blake, you are a traitor.
>> Why you call it, Mr. Blake?
>> The professor is hardly in a position to call another man a traitor when he is one himself.
You do wrong to Mr. Blake. He is a good American, a typical American. He does what he does for money. Large sums of money which I pay him.
Is not this the American way, >> Mr. Mara?
>> Yes, Beno.
We have visitors.
>> Visitors. How many?
>> One?
>> No. No. Two?
>> Both men?
>> Men?
>> No. Chilling. A boy and a girl. A >> boy and a girl.
>> Should I take care of them for you, Mer?
>> No. Are they coming this way? I'm not so sure now.
>> They seem to moving in and out among the rocks.
>> You cannot go up there. It is too dangerous. I think >> they're talking now. Let me get them for you.
>> Not so fast, Mr. Blake. They may have found the cabin by accident. There may be others with them. When we don't know the strength of the enemy or their intentions, it is wiser to let them make the first move.
>> These men, they are smart. You cannot fool them.
>> Why not? I've seen my uncle Sky King pull tricks like this lots of times. I walk straight up to the door. I pretend I'm lost and thirsty and tired. I put them off their guards. Then when they're least expecting it, I I pull my gun and get the drop on them.
>> And what happens if first they get the drop on you? You're just a girl, Gretchen. You wouldn't understand these things. Leave everything to me. And stay here until I call you.
>> Well, are they coming? Yes, one of them.
The boy.
>> What about him? One look at him and they'll know something's wrong. Put him on the couch and cover him with a blanket.
>> I suggest, professors, that you keep your M closed because if you don't, you may cause us to harm the boy.
Hello.
>> I'm sorry, but I seem to have lost my way, and I'm terribly thirsty, and I wonder if I >> But of course, young man, come right in.
Mr. Blake, a glass of water, please. Our young friend is thirsty.
>> I'm sorry. I I hope I didn't disturb you. Is the old gentleman ill?
>> He is slightly indisposed, but we are taking good care of him.
>> Oh, it's lucky he has you way out in this wilderness. I mean, are you are you the only ones here?
>> But of course, who else would be way out here, as you put it, in this wilderness?
>> Don't come any closer.
>> Well, now would you look at that? Pop guns.
>> I told you not to come any closer. Now, stick them up, both of you. You better do as the young man says, Mr. Blake.
Never argue with a loaded gun.
>> Now you're TALKING SENSE. ALL RIGHT, GRETCHEN, COME ON IN.
>> GRETCHEN, you mean my daughter is with you? No.
>> QUIET, PROFESSOR.
>> LOOK OUT, GRETCHEN.
>> WELL, what do you know? This little man is a little ladyo.
Little girls playing cops and robbers.
Why don't you stay home where you belong and play with your dolls?
Oh, >> who are you now?
>> Temper, Mr. Blake. Temper. In my country, we never strike women. We put them to work where they are most useful, in the kitchen. And as our plane will not be along for some time yet, and we are all quite hungry, I suggest we allow our guests to prepare a meal for us under your supervision, Mr. Blake, of course.
>> And if we refuse, >> women have such soft hearts. They cannot bear to watch pain inflicted, especially on an old man.
>> Please. Oh, let's do as I say.
>> All right.
Penny, Penny.
Skye, where are you? Town founders contraption. How do you make it work?
Sky, can you >> flying Crown Ranch calling Songbird?
>> Thunder and Lightning. Sky, answer me.
>> Songbird to Flying Crown Ranch. Is that you, Jim? It's Penny Sky. The fool kids found Professor Glutman's daughter >> and she sent back word she she's trying to rescue the professor all on her own.
Where is he being held, Jim? Where?
Over.
>> She's not sure. Skye, >> it's in a cabin somewhere in Willow Valley. She thinks >> you better search that area quick. I'm heading for it on horseback right away.
>> Roger. Wil, >> that crazy Penny. Why couldn't she have stayed at home where she belonged?
>> Don't be too hard on her, Clipper. At least she found Professor Glrookman, which is more than we were able to do.
Steady, boy. Stay. Looks like I'm going to have to outflank him.
Mr. Blake. Uh, does Mr. Mer like his eggs sunny side up or dimpled?
>> Dimpled? What's that?
>> Haven't you ever seen a dimpled egg?
Well, show him, Gretchen.
>> They just look like plain fried eggs to me.
>> Oh, no, Mr. Blake. They're full of dimples. Look more closely.
>> Well, that's no good outlaw.
Stay where you are. Drop that poker.
>> You ought to be ashamed of yourself trying to hit that poor little girl and her father.
>> Jim.
>> Penny, IT'S YOU.
>> OF COURSE IT'S ME. AND YOU'VE JUST RUN EVERYTHING.
>> YOU sure have, mister. I'd drop that gun before I have to use this. If I'd only known it was you, Penny. What are you doing dressed in that get up?
>> I WAS PROVING THAT A WOMAN CAN DO A MAN'S JOB until you came along.
>> All right, you three in there. We'll let Mer decide what to do with you.
>> There, that ought to hold him.
I think the two young ladies will be safer upstairs with Mr. Kalinko. If you should try anything up there, this gun of his goes off very easily. Up, both of you.
If you are hoping to be rescued from the air, my young friend, it is a vain hope.
There are no doubt many planes looking for us, but this cabin is practically invisible from above. They will never find us. Kinko, if you need to use the gun, let's go.
All right, you two get over there.
>> That sky is plain. Gee, if we could only signal him somehow.
>> You will not whisper, please. We wish no more reception. Now, what did you say? I just said that I I'm tired of trying to be a boy and I want to be a girl again.
>> Oh, so finally the young lady admits she cannot be a young man.
>> Well, I admit it. All right. I feel like a girl and I'm scared like a girl.
Gee, all I wish is that I could look like a girl again.
That brother of mine. Wouldn't you think he'd at least carry a comb in his pocket? Good. He does.
Is there any law against a girl combing her hair?
>> No. It's one of the few things a girl can do without getting into trouble.
Jeez, guy. It seems like we've been over every foot of this area.
>> I guess it's no use.
>> That cabin's got to be down there among those trees. They've never built it out in the open.
>> Skye, look >> what >> down there. Don't you see? It's a light.
Like a reflection from a mirror.
>> Yes, I see.
>> Do you think that's a signal from Penny Sky?
>> We'll soon find out.
I do not like this. It is too quiet outside.
>> That's just because the airplane's gone.
>> You comb your hair a long, long time.
>> Don't most women.
>> That's it. Mr. Ma, Mr. Ma, we have been tricked. The boy girl, she has been sending signals.
There must be at least a half a dozen of them out there.
Let's get out of here before we're surrounded and leave my prisoner, Mr. Blake. Oh, never. I followed him too far and too long.
>> But I get paid to do your dirty work for you. Not to die for you. I'm getting out of here while there's still time. Don't go. You are not only a traitor, but a coward.
I'll have to put Eddie.
Eddie, are you all right?
>> Of course, I'm all right. Didn't you think I could do a simple job like rescuing the professor?
It's difficult to express our gratitude to you properly. We think that you are like your I mean like our wonderful country. Brave, bold, and full of goodness.
>> You're brave and bold and good yourself, professor. Are those enemies of yours that wouldn't have been so anxious to get their hands on you. They won't bother you again. And that's for sure.
We got nice strong jails around here.
You have much nicer sides here than that. And Gretchian and I we are going to see them.
>> Goodbye.
>> Goodbye, Professor.
>> And thanks again.
>> You're welcome.
>> Bye, Gretchen.
>> So long, professor.
>> Goodbye, Gretchen.
>> Bye.
>> Bye.
>> Gee, they were nice. I'm going to miss them.
>> Yeah, me too.
Hey, is it them you're going to miss or wearing my clothes? You know, you made kind of a funnyl looking boy.
>> Oh, Clipper, don't worry. I'll never bald them again. All this excitement that's happened has just been too much for a mere girl. You were right. A woman's place is in the home.
Coming up next, our second Sky King episode titled Sky Robbers from 1959.
15,000 bucks. Boy, that's a lot of money.
>> Peanuts compared to what they'll take in at the box office. But they come from all over the state to see these races.
>> Are you kidding? In this one horse town?
>> One horse town, huh? Two bucks a throw for general admission and some guys are poning up as much as a hundred for a box seat. Sweet charity.
What's he turning for?
>> Why didn't Greg land?
>> He's going to stop off at that Sky King's ranch first. When Greg Nelson plans a job, he don't leave any loose ends.
Hi.
>> Hi, >> Mr. Kinger on.
>> Um, no he isn't. Uh, but I'm his niece, Penny.
>> Greg Nelson. I apologize for sitting down in a private strip, but I just pulled into Grover yesterday and I didn't have a car in town to drive out here in.
>> That's not a badl looking taxi cab you got there.
>> That's not a bad looking crate you've got.
>> Isn't she great? I only wish you were mine, but at least I get to fly her in the race this Saturday.
>> That's what I came to see Mr. King about. I'm here for the air meet.
>> Oh, you are.
I feel kind of sorry for you flying against my uncle Sky.
>> I can take care of myself in the clinches.
>> I wouldn't be too sure. Well, I guess there isn't any reason why you can't come in the house and wait for Uncle Sky. He's out marking a fence line.
Yeah, I don't think it'll be too long.
All right, get ready to throw out another Chuck. Okay, boss.
>> It sure is a lazy man's way of marking a post line. It beats trudging across these hills with a few light and chain.
Get ready to drop another. All right.
Now, >> hey, what if a wind comes up, boss?
>> Take a mighty strong wind to dislodge that slacked line. When you take that ground crew out tomorrow, you won't have any trouble running the fence line.
>> Could you figure out a way to lay the wire from here? Sure would save a lot of walking.
>> I've been working on it. There's the section marker in the end of the line.
Toss out another. We'll head for home.
Right.
So that's the famous Groer trophy.
>> Uncle Skye's won it twice in a row.
Yeah, it's like uh buying a car in the installment plan. One more payment and it's all mine.
>> You better take one long last look at it, Penny. I'm going to take it home with me Saturday.
>> Oh, no you're not. It's been right here for the past 2 years. And by now it's part of the family. But uh if anyone else has to win it, I guess you can keep the dust off of it as well as I can.
>> Well, you must have made quite an impression on Penny for her to concede even that much. Oh, he did not. It's just um Would you like me to make you A POT OF COFFEE?
>> I think that would be an excellent idea, young lady.
>> She was >> quite a gal, your niece.
>> Yeah.
>> Flies, too. Huh?
>> Very well.
>> I suppose you wonder why I'm here, Mr. King.
>> Well, to tell you the truth, I have been a little curious.
Well, I've been flying for quite a few years now, but I don't know too many members of the association. And well, I've been wanting to get in that Grover race.
>> Yeah. They tell me you need two members of the association to sponsor your application. Well, after Bob Farley signed, he said that you Bob.
>> Do you know Bob Farley?
>> Yes. He's an old friend of mine.
>> Well, why didn't you say so? If Bob Farley vouches for you, that's good enough for me. Hand me that application.
I uh suppose you have a pen, too.
>> Well, thanks.
>> How'd it go? Smooth as silk. As soon as they saw King's signature on the application blank, they didn't even look at it any further.
>> Well, where do we go from here?
>> They're having a meeting over in the office at 10:00. Ben, you come with me.
You two boys keep out of sight.
>> Okay, Greg. Come on.
>> Yeah. Good.
>> Greg, how'd you make out?
>> All set, thanks to you.
>> All right.
>> This is Ben Merson, my mechanic.
>> Nice to know you, Ben. How are you?
>> Fine.
>> By the way, what's our racing course?
>> Come here. I'll show you.
>> Now, from takeoff point, we fly a northwesterly course to Cedar Mountain.
Turn south at Cedar Mountain down to Blackbes. Now, be sure and turn inside Blackbes. Then fly a northeasterly course back to the field.
>> Doesn't sound too complicated.
>> It isn't.
>> Can I get a map of the course?
>> Go to where Mr. Marsh has got a lot of them. Pat, give Mr. Nelson a map, will you? Sure. Help yourself.
>> Here, Ben. Take a minute. Hi, Penny.
What are you doing?
>> She's drooling over the trophy for the debut derby. It's her first competition.
>> Isn't it beautiful?
>> Here, take it from me to you.
>> I wish it were that easy. Oh, golly. I hope I win it.
>> You will. Attention everyone. We're going to draw for starting positions in the main event. Contestants will leave the starting line at 3minut intervals.
The race will be 100 miles. The winner decided on elaps time. Sheriff Harro, will you draw the names for starting positions?
>> I'd be glad to.
>> I've written the names of five entries here on the slips of paper.
>> Yeah. Can I use your hat, sir?
>> Well, you bet. All right.
>> I'll guarantee you that's the most important thing that's ever been in that hat.
>> Now, pick the first starter.
>> Charles Hastings.
>> Mr. Hastings starts first. Harvey Mason.
Mr. Mason starts second.
>> Glad I didn't draw first position.
>> I drew next to last in the Debbie Ton Derby.
>> Drew Henry. Drew Henry starts third.
Greg Nelson, >> it's my lucky number.
>> Mr. Nelson goes fourth and Skyler King.
Our good friend Sky goes last. The course will be open to contestants from today until the morning of the race for practice. Thank you. And may the best man win.
>> Making crutch about my hat. I'll see that you come last.
>> All right. I may be last at least.
>> Uh, just a moment. It's Welder at the bank. He wants to know what time he should pick up the gate receipts. Well, tell him if it's all right with him, as late as possible. It takes time to tally everything up.
>> Now, uh, the sheriff said as late as possible.
You know, 3:30 will be fine.
3:30 Saturday then. Okay. I don't like all that money lying around, but I'll be sitting on it like a hen on a nest.
Hi, Ben. Hi. Well, how'd it go? Great.
The only thing between us and that money is a hick sheriff.
I flew the course today. And here's the layout. The black but is about 40 mi from the airfield, just off the raceourse. It's well beyond any roadblocks in case anything should go wrong. Right behind the but is a dirt road that leads into Highway 9. You and Mushy have the car there. I'll fly behind the bees. Drop the money, then come back on the course and finish the race.
>> Well, why bother to finish the race?
We'll have the money with us.
>> If I should drop out of the race, they might suspect me. Besides, I wouldn't mind taking that trophy away from Sky King.
Yeah.
Heat.
Now remember, Penny, cut the pylons close, but don't lose air speed.
>> All right. Don't lose the pylons and cut the air speed. Oh, well. I mean, you know, I know what you mean.
>> Sure. And keep your radio on, GENTLEMEN.
ATTENTION, PLEASE.
>> Your attention, please. The next event is the Debuton Derby for Lady Flyers to be flown on the lake side of the field.
>> I got to go. I got to get in. Everybody, simmer down now. Take a deep breath.
>> There, that's better. Okay, you're going.
>> ATTENTION. Entrance for Debbie Derby.
Report to the starting line, please.
>> Now, you make this a good race, HUH?
TOLD YOU.
>> I TOLD YOU.
CALLING. Calling X3 Y calling X3 Y.
>> Come in X3 Y over.
>> Yes, Uncle Sky.
>> Henny, the next time you round the pylon, give her a full gun and keep her nose down.
>> How's that, Uncle Sky?
>> You're doing fine, but hold your altitude.
>> Plane number one. Elapse time 12 minutes 31 seconds.
That's great, Penny. Now, give her a little more throttle if you've GOT ANY.
>> IT'S WIDE open now. I'm on my last lap.
>> Lane number two. No, it's number four finishing.
Elapse time for plane number four. 12 minutes and 1 second. The winner, Miss Penny Gain.
>> AH, YOU DID A KITTEN.
GOOD LUCK.
>> OH, I'M PROUD OF YOU, PENNY.
>> HEY, KNOW I HAVE A TROPHY, TOO.
>> YOU SURE DO. LISTEN, I GOT TO WARM UP the song bird. Want to come along?
>> OH. UM, WELL, NO. I HAVE SOMETHING I SHOULD DO.
>> AH, I suppose you want to see one of MY COMPETITORS, HUH? OH, Uncle Sky.
>> Okay.
>> Sheriff will be picking up the receipts any time now.
>> I'm all set, boss.
>> Hi.
>> Hi. Thanks.
