When reassembling the handle, ensure proper alignment of the collar. The collar should align with the hole when the point is facing the hole. If the handle is misaligned, it may need to be adjusted or reinstalled. The handle screw is typically 10mm in size. Proper alignment ensures smooth handle operation and prevents binding or uneven tension during use.

Hi, this is Dennis with Second Chance Tackle. Today our project involves a hybrid type of a reel. It's a small chassis framed star star drag reel. It is the Maxel hybrid HI.
And it's a small frame perfect for jigging inshore. Has a nice retrieve ratio on it. And uh well, we're going to show you how to take this reel apart, how to service it, how to keep it friction for a long time to come. The nice thing about this reel, well, it's just a very simple straightforward reel.
There's no line guide involved in it at all. It's just uh a um solid dependable reel with a few moving pieces and parts. The less parts, the better in terms of a reel uh having things that could possibly fail. Well, we're going to get started on this reel. We're going to remove the handle first. And the handle's got this little tie down clip on it here holding on across it. It's a very attractive little reel. It probably is sitting on a a 7-ft uh medium or fast action rod. Uh perfect.
Perfect. You can run lures on this if you like. It's got a fast retrieve. So, if you're um you're out against those um pelagics that uh just love chasing and come at a high speed at you, something around the New Jersey or the Mid-Atlantic uh states like a bluefish would be ideal uh to to use a reel like this. So, I guess the only question would be how far they're going to run because of the line capacity on it. But oftentimes these are used in the rocks for uh jigging against the uh deeper water fish that uh well, just are attracted to those jigs. Okay.
One of the things I like to do while I'm doing this is encourage you to subscribe to my channel. I cover all kinds of fishing reel service and activities. And we go over a little about the the reels themselves. We tell you how to service them so that you can do it yourself. This is a as I mentioned the Maxel Hybrid. Just take notes as you take the pieces and parts off. This has a little washer that sits between the star adjuster and the handle.
When I take my pieces and parts off, my parts organization is to use a parts tray. I recommend that you have a parts strategy before you start removing the pieces. And the other thing I recommend that you do is take pictures along the way. Those pictures may be invaluable to you later on should you get stuck and maybe forgot the the washer went there or or something else. Those pictures are always a fail safe. And my fail safe, of course, I'm taking videos. You don't need to take a video for your pictures, but you might want to consider using your camera or your phone or your Well, whatever your image capture device is to help along with that. So, not only is there a um washer that sits on top, there's a washer that sits underneath. Noted. This is your noise maker.
When you take these pieces off, make sure you remember how they go. Noise maker is up. There's a couple of shim washers inside of that. I'm going to put those all together in one piece just to remember the sequence. And then you have one small washer that is a bearing shield that sits on top of that bearing. So, that's your exterior pieces. And now we have three Torx screws.
Let's see if we can get the right one first time. Probably not.
Well, that one came out easy enough.
This is a Torx nine if you're wondering what the size of it is if you have one yourself.
And we'll just find another corner of our parts tray to support that. Sometimes these things are salted in, depends on where the reel is being used. This one was sent in by Bert.
And uh looks to be in pretty good shape. He sent in three salt water reels, so I'm assuming he's using these in that uh salt water environment. I think he's out of Pennsylvania.
And uh you know, he might be in the Delaware River, but he may also be uh heading across the lower part of New Jersey and heading out towards some of the salt water and that uh species in that environment. Three screws are out, we should be able to remove the side plate. Remember, we have a bearing on the top of this. We have an instant anti-reverse clutch. Good place to take pictures right here. Best thing to do, take those screw those springs off right away. They have a tendency to shoot.
Last thing you want to do is get involved in a shootout. Going to have to go looking a long way for that stuff.
There's a bearing inside here and there's also a little shaft that's going to be immediate area to your opinion gear.
>> [clears throat] >> Make sure you clean that up. So much of your fishing reel service is a matter of just cleaning and getting rid of the old grease and dirt and debris and then coming back in and re-lubricating it. And that's basically what this reel is all about today. So we've cleaned that case, we're going to set that to the side. Good place to take a picture again. We have a spacer. On the spacer, we have two tags or studs if you will that come out the bottom. They're going to sit into your main gear.
You can remove the main gear.
You'll find a nice set of carbontex drag washers in this one.
We also have an anti-reverse here.
That's a ear dog and a washer underneath. These appear to be excellent condition.
Sometimes you can just kind of to this out. Be careful as you're working this.
This is a finger dog. You're going to want to insert it the way it came out.
But I did want to come underneath here and put a drop of oil in the base of the shaft.
That could be a bearing in there. Most of the time it's just a bushing.
I'm going to take a moment here to use a paper towel to clean that and we're going to come in on an angle so that again we can seat this properly inside that tag end without disrupting it.
If you need to, you can remove that.
There's a E-clip right here to remove it, but in this case it's a very clean assembly. Nothing needed to be done there. Same thing here. We're going to pull our pinion gear out.
Pinion gear is um nestled on these two uh studs or posts. Underneath that, unless your trip mechanism is not working and it is clean like this one is, just take a moment here to put some oil on it. You don't need to do too much.
When you remove your yoke, you're going to find that the yoke has two ramps on it.
That's going to be pushed on to move your free spool in and out. Find those ramps.
Just had one come in where the yoke was installed backwards. That's the angle and the angle side is going to face in on the assembly. Same thing here with your pinion gear. Clean that up. I use a WD-40 or a penetrating oil to get the old greases out of that. I like to use a bristle brush to do that as well.
And I like to keep that stuff off my bench by kind of pulling it onto that paper towel.
There's enough stuff on my board, but you get the idea, right? All right. Uh clean and inspect. Make sure all of those teeth are uniform, that they're not bent or broken.
You'll know that. Your your reel will have a little bit of a gallop to it if there's a bent tooth.
Generally, what will happen is that the reel itself will kind of be like hitting a speed bump.
You'll be going along and then it will just have a little stagger to it.
Bring that back in. Remember, ramp sides are facing in.
This goes over the post.
This is basically the way it sits, but turn your opinion gear so that it pulls that assembly all the way in.
All right. Want to do the same thing here that we just did with the other.
There goes a piece.
Fortunately, it's just the brush.
Going to pull through again.
You can use a pinion uh the WD-40 penetrating oil on this if you like, but if it's clean and coming out and you can get the dirt out of the valleys of that gear, just go ahead and do that. You don't need to use that penetrating oil.
It just helps when you got something that's stuck. So, if you're seeing that you got varnish on your reel or just old greases that just aren't cooperating, it will dissolve those greases. That's primarily what I use it for.
It does uh I don't use that as a lubricant. It's too thin in fishing reels, but it does do a good job of degreasing.
Okay.
Bring all of that back in.
Let's assemble that.
Nice reel overall. I like what I'm seeing here. These are carbon text washers.
Looks like a 10-washer set. Always fun.
Take a look at what you have here.
Typically, you will have two of these uh metal washers that have a circle in the center. In this case, they have four tabs behind.
You have three of the metals that have the rectangular center. Those are called keyed. One of them is thicker and it has the extension there for the two studs we showed you before. That's your top washer.
To install these, they're all the same.
They're carbon text. They do not need to be lubricated.
They're non-absorbent, non-permeable.
So, putting oils and greases on there has little effect.
So, we want to alternate now. So, we did a um keyed washer. Now, we're going to do what's called the eared washer. Those are the four studs. They go into the four slots on your main gear.
Now, next washer in.
Second of your keyed. So, we're alternating keyed and eared washers.
Next washer.
Studs go down, if you were wondering.
The tabs go down on this.
Again, they seat right into your slots in the main gear. How does that work on a drag? Well, when you tighten all of this down, those tabs in the main gear are holding the tab. The rectangle on the shaft is holding the shaft.
And when you press down, both are being held and that's how you get your drag.
When you loosen up, one or the others will start to spin.
And that's uh that's how you have the release of that drag tension. The two studs mount on your shaft. Make sure that they're flat and that they there's no seam right here at the base.
Okay, almost done with closing this one up. As I said, simple is better.
This case, you got a lot of max drag in this one.
Maybe that's why it's maxel, right? It's got a lot of drag here.
And uh that drag is all about the uh the fight, right? So, this is built for a big fish.
Okay.
The springs are on.
Everything else is I'm checking into my parts case belongs on the ex- exterior.
Going to grab this.
Make sure that we insert the stud into the pinion gear.
We can close the case up.
We have the three case screws.
Doesn't matter which one you put in first or last in this case. They're triangular, so it's going to be equal tension in every way you go. It's a nice reel overall. I like the look of it. Like the feel of it.
This has got a lot of life left in it.
And uh plenty to make sure that the reel can keep on fishing. Just keep it serviced.
Recommended service interval is once a year.
And then that we can put the rest of the hardware pieces on the outside. We'll give it a test here.
Bearing shield goes in first.
Then we have that series of adjusters and the noise maker.
Bring those down.
We have the flat washer that goes underneath your star adjuster.
Star adjuster can go on next. Now, when you're putting this on, make sure that you put it on where it's square. If you see it's canted at all, it's got to be worked backwards. You'll also find on some of these attempts that the little uh noise maker crown there doesn't go underneath. So, take a uh little flat plated screwdriver, push it down.
That will allow you to bring it back in and on.
I'll tighten this down.
Eventually, we'll catch that noise maker.
There we go.
Then we noted we have the washer that goes on the post.
Then the handle.
Then we have the screw.
And I think this handle screw is a 10 mm.
The toughest part of all of this really is just kind of loading to get this evened up for your uh collar. Usually, if that point is facing right at that hole, the collar should align.
There you go. It's aligned.
One small screw, give it a test.
See how we did.
It's a good reel. I like them.
I think they're in the $300 range. I'm not sure.
It's been a while since I've checked it.
Maybe maybe less.
They're Maxel. That's the name of the reel if you're not familiar with it.
There's a couple of them out there that are like this.
It's a format that I guess became popular in the last oh 15 years or so. Really with the advent of braid.
Once braid hit the scene, modern braid hit the scene, it was stronger, it was lighter, thinner.
And what that meant was you could get a a lot of line on a small spool.
Where you used to have to have that big spool for your for your monofilament you no longer need that.
Okay, I think I'm off just slightly. I'm trying to find something probably made a piece that I just knocked on the floor.
Going to find something to check the alignment there. Yeah, I'm off just a little bit just enough Let's try that one more time.
If this doesn't work I'll have to take that off and reset it.
Yeah, we're off just a little bit. Well, while I'm doing this if you have any questions on this reel or any reel you want to leave them in the comments section. I will try to answer the questions for you.
It's always fun to to learn and that's kind of what Second Chance Tackle is all about helping you to learn about fishing reels how they're made how they're used and even introduces you to something you maybe maybe you're not aware of. All right, where am I now?
All right, it was a little bit of a wrestling match but we got it started.
So let's finish that off.
So we're off by the littlest amount but sometimes that's the precision to which they're made, right?
Using a micro driver here for this.
Okay. What did we do? Took the reel apart, showed you the gear side, showed you how to clean, lubricate and reassemble the reel. Told you a little bit about the reel. It's a beautiful reel all the way around and uh it's got a lot of fishing left in it as we mentioned. Let's uh give it a spin.
We're going to tighten it up here.
There you go. Look at it. You can cast this thing miles.
Beautiful all around.
Okay. Let's crank, make sure we come back with our return. We do.
Tighten down on our drags, make sure that they're tight.
Nice power hold to them. Turns free and easy. This is a beautiful reel for jigging.
Once you do, when you're done, push back.
Your drag washers off a little bit. You don't want the star adjuster to compress them and shorten their useful life. All right, that's it. That's your Maxel.
It's the uh hybrid HI. It's a beautiful little reel. If uh you're looking for a small jigging reel, perfect for inshore ocean. Or if you're looking for one, well, maybe you've got those bluefish close to shore and you want to uh have a high-speed retrieve, nice reel for that.
Put on a lightweight pole and have a ball.
Well, before I leave, I want to thank our first responders, our police, fire, safety, rescue, everybody involved in keeping us out of harm's way. Appreciate everything you do day in and day out.
Want to thank everybody who's been watching, everybody who's subscribed. If you haven't subscribed, please uh give it a give it a thought. Uh it helps you, it'll help my channel, and uh well, maybe you'll learn a little bit more about other fishing reels along the way.
This is Dennis with Second Chance Tackle, wishing everybody a great day.
Thanks again for watching.
