Living a double life requires constant pretending and creates significant psychological costs. When individuals must present different versions of themselves to different groups (such as teachers, friends, and family), they experience disconnection from their authentic selves. This phenomenon resonates with many people who have had to navigate multiple social environments with conflicting expectations.

Achievement Became Her Survival Mechanism本站收录:
Sometimes overachieving is not confidence. It’s survival. In this moment from Finding North, Jill Simonds shares what it was like growing up feeling the need to wear different masks, hide the truth, and achieve constantly just to feel worthy. This conversation is about identity, authenticity, and the hidden cost of pretending everything is okay. All the pretending and what that costs you to not be aligned with what's real and what the world gets to see and having to live that double life as a child, you come across to me and I believe this is true like one of the most authentic people I know Jill and being able to get from this having to live a couple of lives and be something for the different people like your teachers have to see one version and the friends and the family see another version. That so resonates with me and I I can't imagine there aren't a lot of people that are resonating and connecting to this scenario.
>> The masks that we have to wear in different environments [music] and that's overcoming that has been more so the last few years, probably even more recent because how that takes shape as an overachiever, as a high achiever, as a performer is so hard to peel that back and my teachers would have no idea if anything, you know, they were like, "Oh my gosh, like you're so talented and you got it all together." And I was a 4.2 GPA and then I went to college and then I got a master's degree and then like I never stop achieving because that was really my only form of recognition [music] from my parents.
