Fast radio bursts are millisecond-duration flashes of radio energy first identified by astronomer Duncan Lorimer in November 2007 at Parkes Observatory, Australia, in archival telescope data recorded in 2001. Each burst releases energy equivalent to the sun's output over approximately 3 days, compressed into 0.001 seconds, making each event momentarily brighter than the entire host galaxy. As of 2024, over 600 fast radio bursts have been catalogued, with sources detected from galaxies up to 8 billion light years away. The majority have not been traced to a specific source galaxy. One source — FRB 20121102A — has produced over 1,000 detected repeat bursts from the same location. Magnetars, highly magnetized neutron stars, are the leading candidate explanation for some fast radio bursts. Current magnetar models do not fully account for the repetition patterns observed in repeating sources.
