Sustaining Peace For Future Generations Through Climate ActionIndexed:
What does the future look like? What will happen in 20 years' time? Mak Ho Yeung explored one possible answer when she spoke at The Harbour School on April 26, 2026. Her talk was titled “Sustaining Peace For Future Generations Through Climate Action." The event was part of the TED-Ed Student Talks 2026 theme “Creating Our Futures: 2046” Stream 1: “Peace in 2046.” The venue was sponsored by The Harbour School, and the talks were co-organized by the Rotary Club of Neoteric Hong Kong and Project Agora, with the support of TED-Ed Student Talks official.
You've probably asked yourself this question at least once. Can we truly have peace on a planet that's falling apart? Good afternoon everyone. My name is Matt Coyang and let me give more context about my earlier assumption.
It's as broad as daylight that our world right now is changing by the minute beyond our imagination. And to be honest, that feels quite unsettling.
Every new cycle brings another heatwave, another flood, another conflict about scarce resources. And that makes me believe that when we think about our future right now, we don't think of faster gadgets or cooler technology. We think about something more fundamental.
We think about the people in 2046 being able to breathe clean air and drink clean water of peace. Peace for everyone. But what does peace really mean? According to the vision of humanity, peace doesn't just mean the absence of war. It means the underlying condition that allows human potential to flourish. Where societies can grow culturally, materially, and intellectually in a harmonious and stable way. So, here's the truth. You can't have lasting peace on a planet that's falling apart. Sustaining peace means giving people what they need in order to live with dignity. Clean water, stable food supplies, safe shelter.
Climate action delivers exactly that.
And strong global cooperation means sharing solutions towards climate action, such as the Paris Agreement adopted in 2015 when nations came together and commit themselves into cutting their emissions. But treaties alone aren't enough. What can we do to contribute? Well, it might be easier than you think. Take the bus or any other form of public transit at least one extra day of the week. In your community, join local cleanups. As a citizen, vote for people who speak out about our climate. Every choice ripples forward. Every degree we stabilize is another possibility that the people in 2046 are able to grow up and breathe clean air. Because if we come together as one global community, we can do something extraordinary.
Have a sustainable future that balances peace and climate stability at the same time. Thank you.
