ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a neurodegenerative disorder where toxic proteins damage motor neurons that connect the brain to skeletal muscles, causing progressive muscle weakness; the condition becomes fatal when respiratory muscles (intercostal muscles and diaphragm) weaken, leading to respiratory failure due to carbon dioxide retention and acidosis, though current treatments are limited with gene therapies under study.

THE DEVASTATING REALITY #celebrity #celebritynews #90dayfiance #shorts #alsIndexé :
Reality TV star Jenny Slatten recently shared her ALS diagnosis, inspiring this educational breakdown of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. In this video, I explain the neurological symptoms of ALS, how it affects the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, and why it leads to progressive muscle weakness over time. I also discuss common signs such as muscle twitching, difficulty walking, weakness, speech changes, swallowing problems, and respiratory complications. This video is meant to raise awareness and provide easy-to-understand health education connected to pop culture and trending topics. ALS is a devastating neurodegenerative disease that impacts both patients and families, and early recognition of symptoms can be important. Sending support and well wishes to everyone living with ALS and other neurological disorders. #mentalhealth #ALS #AmyotrophicLateralSclerosis #JennySlatten #90DayFiance #Neurology #MotorNeuronDisease #LouGehrigsDisease #HealthEducation #MedicalTikTok #YouTubeShorts #BrainHealth #NervousSystem #ChronicIllness #DisabilityAwareness #HealthcareWorker #WholesomeNP #patienteducation
Jenny from 90day Fiance sadly shared recently that she has been diagnosed with ALS. Her symptoms started in December of 2024 and uh it was mostly characterized by difficulty in swallowing and even choking on food at one point and then over time her speech became slower. ALS also lugerics disease which is named after the famous baseball player who had this condition is a neurological disorder that causes you to have a hard time in making purposeful movements. When you want to pick up a cup or button of shirts it's like your brain is trying to communicate with those muscles to make that action but it's just unable to. So let's take a brief deep dive here. So you have this gene that is linked to this disease.
Okay. This gene produces toxic proteins.
Now these toxic proteins damage motor neurons. Okay, these motor neurons are what drive that communication between the brain and the skeletal muscles for us to make movement. Okay, these proteins will damage it and eventually cause these motor neurons to die. When the motor neurons die, that's what essentially causes the muscle weakness all over. Okay. Now, what makes this fatal is the fact that we have muscles that help us breathe, our intercostal muscles, our diaphragm. So when those muscles can't help us breathe in, take in oxygen and breathe out, breathe out carbon dioxide, then we're retaining that carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide is extremely acidotic. So we run the risk of getting into respiratory failure. So this is more of a later stage and individuals with this condition may have to rely on tra tubes or ventilation for breathing supports.
As many people know, there is no treatments for ALS, but there is some gene therapies that are currently being studied so that they can target the gene that produces these toxic proteins and try to develop medications around that.
Jenny, we are sending you our love. I really admire your spirits and your attitude about this diagnosis.
