The Day Maya Angelou Hugged Me… I was a Gospel Singer for the Glide Memorial Baptist Choir in San Francisco CA. It was 2008 and every Sunday I sang there with the choir. Maya Angelou came to our church to speak. She was effervescent and smiling the entire time. I don’t remember how we came to be the only two souls walking behind the stage that day, but I do remember walking up to her and thanking her for the gift of her presence that Sunday and I asked her if I could hug her. She opened up her arms and said, “Come here my child.” She hugged me like I was her family, like she had known me all my lifetime. It was the absolute BEST HUG I have ever been given!!! She taught me a real gift that day. When you hug someone, no matter who it is, really HUG them, like it’s the last hug you might ever receive. I try to hug everyone now with that same kind of Love Maya Angelou gave me that day. I’ll never forget meeting her. Since Covid, the world seems to be afraid of letting us get that close to another persons soul. It’s vulnerable to be in another’s personal space. Respectfully I asked Maya if I may hug her. This too is always important to remember. We must be respectful and ask permission to be in another person’s personal space. Personal space is personal and as we are respectful, so too will we be respected. May all beings be Peaceful. 🙏 💝
