Engineers just created a fixed-wing drone with lightweight mechanical legs inspired by how birds switch between walking and flying. Unlike traditional drones with fixed landing gear that fail on rough terrain, this bird-inspired drone uses mechanical legs that absorb impact on any surface and launch the drone into flight from anywhere — no runway required. The legs enable the drone to navigate rocky terrain, debris fields, and steep slopes that would stop any conventional drone completely.
