Octane is a measure of a fuel's ability to resist uncontrolled detonation (knocking) in an engine. It determines how much energy gasoline can release without detonating. Without high octane, engines must run less efficiently and require more repairs. Octane serves as the invisible foundation of global mobility.

octane crisis in the gasoline industryIndexed:
Rising crude oil prices with the strait of Hormuz blockade has disadvantaged feedstock naphtha as a petrochemical feedstock in an ethylene steam cracker. The world shifting to lighter feedstocks such as ethane create a significant shortage of aromatic octane boosters for gasoline. There may not be a shortage of gasoline yet, but the octane components of the overall gasoline blend could become the issue. @UncleSamOilGasMan
It starts with a sound, a sharp metallic ping.
The sound of fuel detonating too early in your engine.
Uncontrolled combustion. And the only thing that prevents it is octane.
Octane determines how much energy gasoline can release without detonating.
Without high [music] octane, engines must run less efficiently and require more repairs. Octane is the invisible foundation of global mobility.
The gasoline octane pool [music] is built from five families of molecules: paraffins, isoparaffins, olefins, naphthenes, and aromatics. The heavy hitters, often above 110 octane.
After lead was phased out, aromatics became the backbone of global octane.
Oil refineries rely on a few key blend stocks, reformate aromatics making up the most share, with other options such as alkylate, isomerate, and hydrotreated naphtha, along with ethanol and butane.
Regarding butane in the winter, gasoline can contain roughly five times more butane than in the summer. Summer gasoline blends consist of just 2% butane versus 10% to help reduce smog formation as cold start performance is [music] not needed.
Ethanol has high octane, but it can't replace aromatics. Blend walls limit ethanol to 10 to 15%. It raises vapor pressure in summer, and it [music] cannot supply the dense aromatic structures gasoline needs.
But the molecules that supply octane are disappearing. Not because of transportation, but because of petrochemicals.
Rising crude oil has petrochemical steam crackers shifting their feedstock from naphtha to ethane or LPG.
A naphtha cracker yields 10 to 15% aromatics. An ethane cracker yields less than 0.3%.
That's a 95 to 98% collapse in aromatic and octane output.
And petrochemical demand for these aromatics has exploded over the years.
Paraxylene for PET bottles and polyester fibers.
Packaging, solvents, coatings, adhesives. China alone consumes over half of global paraxylene. Every ton of polyester and pet plastic consumes aromatics that competes heavily with gasoline [music] for octane enhancement.
To replace lost aromatic octane, refiners are scrambling down the list of octane options.
The chemical markets and gasoline [music] markets, once good acquaintances, now competitors for molecules.
Gasoline still appears at the pump, but behind the scenes, refiners are fighting for every octane molecule to keep it that way.
Do you think the octane [music] market for gasoline will tighten further?
