[00:00:09]Uncontrolled combustion. And the only thing that prevents it is octane.

[00:00:14]Octane determines how much energy gasoline can release without detonating.

[00:00:18]Without high [music] octane, engines must run less efficiently and require more repairs. Octane is the invisible foundation of global mobility.

[00:00:27]The gasoline octane pool [music] is built from five families of molecules: paraffins, isoparaffins, olefins, naphthenes, and aromatics. The heavy hitters, often above 110 octane.

[00:00:38]After lead was phased out, aromatics became the backbone of global octane.

[00:00:43]Oil refineries rely on a few key blend stocks, reformate aromatics making up the most share, with other options such as alkylate, isomerate, and hydrotreated naphtha, along with ethanol and butane.

[00:00:55]Regarding butane in the winter, gasoline can contain roughly five times more butane than in the summer. Summer gasoline blends consist of just 2% butane versus 10% to help reduce smog formation as cold start performance is [music] not needed.

[00:01:09]Ethanol has high octane, but it can't replace aromatics. Blend walls limit ethanol to 10 to 15%. It raises vapor pressure in summer, and it [music] cannot supply the dense aromatic structures gasoline needs.

[00:01:22]But the molecules that supply octane are disappearing. Not because of transportation, but because of petrochemicals.

[00:01:29]Rising crude oil has petrochemical steam crackers shifting their feedstock from naphtha to ethane or LPG.

[00:01:35]A naphtha cracker yields 10 to 15% aromatics. An ethane cracker yields less than 0.3%.

[00:01:42]That's a 95 to 98% collapse in aromatic and octane output.

[00:01:47]And petrochemical demand for these aromatics has exploded over the years.

[00:01:50]Paraxylene for PET bottles and polyester fibers.

[00:01:53]Packaging, solvents, coatings, adhesives. China alone consumes over half of global paraxylene. Every ton of polyester and pet plastic consumes aromatics that competes heavily with gasoline [music] for octane enhancement.

[00:02:07]To replace lost aromatic octane, refiners are scrambling down the list of octane options.

[00:02:12]The chemical markets and gasoline [music] markets, once good acquaintances, now competitors for molecules.

[00:02:18]Gasoline still appears at the pump, but behind the scenes, refiners are fighting for every octane molecule to keep it that way.
