You've probably heard people say things like you're just stuck in survival mode and most people think that means you're just barely getting by, living paycheck to paycheck, feeling drained, anxious, or stuck in unhealthy cycles. But that's not what survival mode really is because survival mode isn't about what you're doing, it's about what's happening inside your brain and body. When you've lived through enough pain, stress, or uncertainty, your body learns that the world isn't safe.
And once that belief takes root, your whole system changes. Your amygdala, the fear detector in your brain, stays on guard, constantly scanning for danger, even when there isn't any. And your prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain that handles logic, focus, and calm decision-making starts to shut down. It's like the lights go out in your mind's control room. That's why when you're triggered, you can't just calm down.
