New brakes and a first road trip in the Abandoned C10 Diesel!本站收录:
The C10 has some new stopping power! Now for a road trip to see what else is wrong with this thing🤣
Hey everybody, welcome to the show today. Well, here's what's on the agenda at JT Squared. My diesel, if you couldn't catch last week, she's a runner. It also is a mover. It's not a stopper. So, we're going to address all those problems today. Let's get after it.
Well guys, what I thought was was going to be the problem with the brakes on this is the master cylinder as it has fluid in the master cylinder. Just no pressure whatsoever. So, can't hurt to replace this and then when I have to replace all the lines and calipers and wheel cylinders and everything all along the way. We'll get to that when we get to that. Like I say, we'll burn that bridge when we get there. But for right now, let's burn this bridge. Now I got the heater in here cuz it was cold like 3 days ago and it's not now. I need a light and some wrenches. Guys, I give this thing a squirt of free all the other day.
And maybe I'll get lucky. You know, I never expect to, but if you remember when we did this to the Grand Prix not very long ago, got lucky with that one. Well, this stupid light.
That's going to work. Okay. And honestly, the lines don't look terrible bad. I mean, I've seen a lot worse than that. So, let me grab a whatever size wrench I think that is. What do you think? 5/8?
>> Sure.
>> Metric? Probably.
>> Sure.
>> I had a subscriber send me these and uh by golly, might as well use them. This is what they're there for. Now, we decided that that was too big. So 9/16 right on the money. Is it turning? Look at that. She's going to work. At least on this side. This just the back brakes and they're not important anyway.
Excuse me.
Okay. Oh, good. They're turning.
Everything's turning out, guys. I have never in my life been able to get these to come right out.
of a master cylinder until my Grand Prix in this vehicle.
Otherwise, I've broke every single one of these off for my entire life. This is exciting. This is This is pretty awesome stuff here. So, I'm not going to take these all the way out just yet because I don't want to leak brake fluid all over everything. Let's see if I can get these two mains off of here. Check this one out over here. She's in.
That one's definitely seen a little rust. Ooh, I'm telling you, this free all. This is the This is the reason those came off.
It has to be.
Give this another shot here. I get my light a little closer to where I can hit it.
>> Can I ask you what this is?
>> That's your brake master cylinder.
>> What does that do? that holds your brake fluid. And I'll I'll give you the 101 here.
>> Sure.
>> So, you put your brake fluid in these two reservoirs. This bigger one operates your front brakes. The smaller one operates your rear brakes. But you also have what's called a proportioning valve down there, and it proportions the fluid properly to each side of the vehicle. 75 to 80% of your braking comes from the front. 20% to 25% is out of the rear.
So, that's why the rear one's obviously a little bit smaller. So, there's a little plunger inside here. When you push the brake pedal, it pushes on this plunger inside of here, and it pushes fluid down through the brake lines, through your proportioning valve and to each wheel, pushes fluid to the caliper, and the caliper squeezes over your brake rotor. And in the back, you have wheel cylinders. They kind of do the opposite thing. And you push put fluid in, they push out, and they close close the brake shoes against the drum.
>> Awesome. Now you know.
>> And now I know. I'm sure your viewers already knew that. But you know, >> you know what? That's all right. We're all in this together.
>> Well, I might as well learn something while I'm doing this, right?
>> You might as well. Okay, now I got to learn what size socket that's going to take. Bet is the 15 mil will fit better.
And my bet was correct. So, we get Okay, let's see if we can Oh, that's much better.
Easy peasy. Let's set that right there so I can knock it down and forget that I had it there and me running around here saying fiveletter words about this guy.
Oh, there's a nut. It's a whole bolt and everything on the back. I got to get another wrench. Let's see. We'll go with the 15 cuz it seemed to work last time.
I got a booster chair. Not really.
Sorry, I'm not taller.
>> You're fine. We're proportionate. I'm telling you. Of course. 15 on one side, not the other. Why is everything got to be this way?
Okay.
My guess was good.
Crying out loud. I can't see a thing.
Trade me places. Yep.
That's better.
Okay, there.
That worked out pretty good. We'll set that there and that there. Now, where' the line wrench go that I was taking those out with?
>> How do I know?
>> I know. I was supposed to be keeping track of everything out here now, too.
>> That's your That's your job.
>> Here and in the house.
>> I went and put tools away like a fool.
here and in the house. I have to keep track of everything.
>> That's That's your job. And my job is to look pretty.
>> Yes. True. True. True.
>> I'm not very good at my job.
>> No. No. You're the pretty one.
>> Oh. Is that right?
There's a pretty one in this shop. And it ain't this truck and it ain't this dude. So >> you're funny.
Okay. See how I got no brake fluid coming out of here? That's a little concerning.
>> See, I feel like that's probably no good.
>> Should have something. What in the world is holding me up here now? Lines everywhere.
Just needed a Come on. You're going back on there in a minute.
Okay.
So, should be leaking a little fluid out, but it's not. But not a big concern. We got the other one, and I'm going to have to bleed that one out. Kind of want to look at the inside of the hydroboost here, which looks pretty terrible.
A little rusty, but if it does what it's supposed to do, I mean, that's okay. I want you to gently push in the brake pedal just a little bit. Okay, good enough. Let her off. Okay, so the hydro booster is doing what it's supposed to Well, we don't know the hydro booster is doing what it's supposed to do, but at least it's pushing on the rod and pushing fluid.
So, that part is ideal. Now, the rest of it, since I can see there's no fluid anyway, we're going to be bleeding brakes. It's going to be a fun afternoon, but that's all right. We'll get it. We'll get it. So, here's our new master cylinder.
the shiniest part on this whole truck.
>> Beautiful.
Okay. Now, what we're going to do is first compare it. Make sure it kind of resembles this one.
Yep. I'd say just as good as any. That is exactly what I need it to be. So, now we have to do is bench blade this.
Let's see. Stop. Guess we can't do anymore.
>> I was going to say collaborate and listen, but >> not an attempt to install this master cylinder without bench bleeding. Well, we were going to do that. I just me I mentioned it before I even opened the box stop. So, let's go in the other shop for a minute.
So, we'll bench bleed it here because this is where I got my vice.
Just clamp her down in there. Not too tight.
Let me look through my toolbox. So, what I got here, friends, this is a master cylinder bleeder kit. Comes with all these different size fittings for all these different sized problems.
Easy enough to use.
Now, I'll use up the rest of this brake fluid before I go into the next brake fluid. Now, I'm just going to fill this up, both sides there. I'm glad I got a second jug camera on this side.
So now what I'm going to do is just flip these underwater here. Take a screwdriver, push on the back of the cylinder, and just start pushing all the air and fluid through until bubbles quit coming out.
All right. So, friends, you can see now I got no more bubbles coming through.
That means this guy is bled out. Now, all I got to do is just hook it onto the truck real quick before anything should happen to get air in it and we'll be in good shape.
Easy peasy, right? Sure. Yeah. Yep. So, what I'm going to do, put the cover on for now.
Carry it away. Just like this. Go back to the truck.
>> It's like we're bringing a heart in for heart surgery.
>> We are exactly doing that. Yes.
You hold these lines while I stick this on the firewall here. Try and do it. Try and sneak it on the same way it came off.
Come on. There you go.
There. Okay.
Bolt these back in place.
You keep holding them lines there.
Okay. Master cylinder installed now. I'm going to take these guys out nice and easy.
Thread these lines right back in the holes here. All without losing too much fluid.
Okay, hold that one.
Sorry. Sorry. Ah, not a good assistant.
>> You're doing just fine.
If I was smarter than I am, I'd have done the back one first, but I'm not.
So, yeah, whatever.
>> You're always up for any new challenge.
>> That's how how it works.
Okay, there. Got everything started.
Bingo. That's good news right there. Now that we have a working master cylinder, we'll probably figure out how many brake lines we're going to need here because they'll just start leaking fluid all over the floor when they break. But after I was under here a little bit, I did notice there is some new lines going in v various places. So maybe we'll get lucky. I'm not betting on it, but maybe there's that one.
There's that one. Okay, now I can peel that back off. Okay, now we should be able to see some excitement out here.
It's probably going to shoot fluid up through here, which is fine, but I want to just see.
Okay, >> I'm seeing a little bubble action.
>> See, the other one wouldn't do that at all. So, that's how I know this one's working.
Okay. So, I'm not getting a lot of brake pressure. Probably what we'll do is hold the front wheels, loosen up the bleeders, and just bleed fluid out. At least it's pumping here, so that's a good start. But, let me uh go grab the brake fluid out of the other shop, and we'll get this up in the air and start start over on the easy side here.
And this will just tell us what what kind of condition everything's in on the inside of this, too.
be able to see just how good or bad the brakes really are on this thing.
Who knows how long it's been since the wheels been off this thing. Could be a long dang time.
Oh boy.
There we go.
My mad killer karate moves.
Okay, let's see. Get my light back in here. You're going to need us some brake pads. These ones are about shot.
>> How much is this going to cost me?
>> Nothing. Probably Probably won't cost you much, if anything. Might need calipers, too. I might just do the whole dang thing since it's part.
>> Might as well.
>> Probably going to need calipers regardless. So, >> might as well.
>> But I want to see if I can get the bleeders loose because that'll at least give me an idea if everything's going to work out.
Okay, get myself a comfy place to sit here.
See if I can get this bleeder to come off without breaking off.
Oh, it doesn't feel good.
It feels really bad. Yeah, like I say, downside is I can't get the bleeders off.
I just have to change out the caliper because that's going to be the right answer. It' be the only answer. Should be done anyway.
>> That feels like it's going to break. You know how sometimes you can just tell.
>> Yes.
>> Maybe.
>> Yeah. I don't know.
>> Do you want me to try it?
>> No. Yeah. Broke right off. That's what I figured. I knew it was going to.
>> That's just how it goes.
Well, got to replace all this junk anyway.
Might as well just do it. Well, update friends. Since this is broken and it looks like it's all junk anyway. Um, I went ahead and called my local friendly O'Reillies and they can have everything here at 3:30 this afternoon. So, we're just going to go ahead and pull everything off.
And that way, all we got to do is slap it all back on again, and uh we'll be in good shape. Now, I got a jack stand around here. Second jack. I don't know.
I'm going to need something. This is completely safe anyway.
Uh let me go get Let's get a couple things figured out here. So, like I said, caliper's got to go. I'm going to crank the wheel all the way over so I can see everything on the back and I should be able to get everything unbolted and There. That's better. Now, every one of these in the world that I've ever taken apart, it's always been an Allen head back here. So, this one will be no different. The thing is is can I get all this crap apart? That's going to be my big big boy. Is that This might be metal to metal on the inside. I'm glad we're taking this apart now. This could have been a disaster.
So, let's see.
Okay, you Oh, good. Okay, so that one turns.
That makes life a little easier. Now, we go two for two.
Yes. Okay. Good.
Good news day. Okay.
Get the brake hose off of this thing.
This will tell us if we're getting brake fluid through. Also, so it is dripping fluid. That's a good sign.
I'm just going to let that do its thing.
We'll kind of keep an eye on the master cylinder and then when I have a good feeling this is really all the way bled through, well, I'll just plug the hole and we'll be off and gring. Let me get these calipers pried off of here or this caliper. Let's say this toolbox has got so many things I'm not used to having like pry bars and Okay, you're going to have to come over here.
>> Shove on off.
>> Yep. Get out of the way, woman.
>> Get out of the way of danger.
Yeah. Now I got you. Yeah. Woohoo. I said the brake pads were shot. I wasn't kidding you.
Okay. Well, I can see this brake line looks everything going up to the proportioning valve looks really really good. So, that's a bonus.
Wheels off the other side. And okay, turn this back.
See what kind of surprises await on this side.
A got no room for karate over here.
There we go. Okay.
Well, this side looks better. Doesn't look like it's been scraped in a while, but it looks like there's at least some brake pad on it.
>> Well, that's exciting.
>> Yep.
Yep. Actually >> Oops. So this side's at least got brake pad, but tearing the whole thing off anyway. It's what's happening.
Kinds of fun stuff in there.
See if these ones at least come loose.
They should. They look a lot cleaner than the other side did.
Yep.
How about It's just this piece of trim.
I know. It's just funny sounding. I'm like, "What in the We'll be able to see on this side if this hose is any good.
Lots of brake fluid coming out of this side.
>> Well, for a second there anyway.
It's doing I can feel a little pressure on this one at least where the other one I couldn't feel anything.
still have brake fluid in it, which doesn't mean this hose is in any better shape, but there is fluid dripping out of it, so that's kind of a good sign.
I'm going let that one ride for now.
All right, let's see if I can get this caliper to peel off of here.
Oh, better.
Look at that.
There's that one.
All the fluid out of it. That one's actually in way actually I'm going to say this is probably a new caliper with what was some fairly new pads cuz the the rust on it is not like never ending story rust. This is this is like just a little surface rust from some time. So, doesn't matter. It's getting new stuff anyway. I still wish brake fluid would come through this a little better than it is, cuz it should be 13.
>> Does it switch between imperial and metric?
>> Um, we're going to find out cuz why make everything the same size?
>> I feel like that's like everything should be the same. It should all be one universal.
>> Just bolts and nuts.
>> Yes. instead of some half inch. See, this is/ inch and that works good. Some of the stuff on this stuff on this truck is of it's 11. Some of it's 10, some of it's wrong, some of it's right.
I don't know what's what, but it's it is >> I feel like if I design trucks, it would be standardized. Like everything would be as the same as possible.
>> That wouldn't be a bad deal.
But alas, >> but alas, you couldn't use every item in your toolbox.
>> Yeah, I want to use every tool that I have available.
Come on now. There. Jeez. This what a me what a what a fun day.
>> Oh, wasn't it fun? It's fun.
>> Yeah, this does put the fu in fun.
This isn't bad. It's just >> It doesn't matter what vehicle you're working on. Brakes are awful.
>> Yes, >> they're the worst. The brakes aren't bad. It's the lines that are the worst.
>> The worst.
>> Yeah.
Okay. So, that's in there. I should be able to snap him off. The other ones in there. I can snap those off. And we'll just go get everything and put it all back together. Are you cutting my brake lines right now?
>> Yes. Doesn't matter. They're plugged anyway.
>> I know.
>> They're worthless.
>> Even if you cut them, they're worthless.
>> They're Yeah. It's not going to work any better one way or another right now.
Everything sucks.
>> Yes.
>> All right. Well, let's run to the auto parts and get all this crap we need to put this together.
>> Let's go, >> puppy.
>> Little kid. Little kid. Kitter, are you inspecting you inspecting the brake job?
She wants no part of this. She doesn't like breaks either.
>> Nope.
>> She's out.
Is >> that my cat? Fluffy.
>> There's a little kitter.
>> You got your got your fist and claws and claws into everything here.
>> Yes. There's a little kitter. A little fluffy fluffy.
>> Yes.
>> All right.
I'm going to go right out ahead and say easy on the crap for not turning the rotors because nobody in town turns rotors. That's just how it goes anymore.
So, this one's pretty flat. I promise you. Couple slaps that they use and it won't be rusty any longer. So, let's get this pins out of here. I sure love this slippery grease they put on these. The silicone grease.
There we go.
I mean, it does do the job, but it sure is possibly hard to work with there.
Now there.
Okay.
There it is.
Okay, there.
Let me get that brake hose on. Very fortunately, I was lucky enough to get everything off without breaking any lines. So, that's good. Yeah. Let me get the line on. Well, everybody, a few more Oh, Fluffy, you're back again. A few more minutes into the future or an hour maybe. It's been a little longer than that. I did have this big line leaking from somewhere underneath the passenger seat to right about where this back wheel is. So, I got a replacement just because I got two new rubbers because why not?
Actually, I the one was pretty well blocked off and the other one was not far behind it. So, it only makes sense to do this. And Oh, yeah. Yeah, I can actually blow up in these ones. Those ones I couldn't even try to begin to puff through. So, I just got to install some brake lines now. Should be good to my new calipers. Now, I've done all this to know that I'm probably going to blow a wheel cylinder in the rear, which stinks. But maybe I'll get lucky and it will last a little while before that happens. But for now, guys, I'm just going to get these lines scooted up up in here.
Can't move the truck until I can stop the truck safely.
Whoa.
Okay. So, I can't wait to get a hoist up in here, friends. That's going to be nice. Won't have to do this little fly experience anymore.
I'm getting my front hoses on here.
Get Mr. JT back on it back in uh back in the saddle here pumping brakes and we're going to be on to something.
Yeah, I can't wait.
Okay, there's that.
Boy, my friends, the excitement's building.
This truck's going to have brakes pretty soon. Going to be able to drive it forward down the road cuz it doesn't have backward. No worries.
I don't let things like that get me down. I got way bigger problems than that.
Okay, that's four. Four brake hoses, two brake hoses, and two brake lines in the rear.
That should be good. Now, if I just get Mr. JT to come back out and help me, we can start bleeding this thing, guys.
Right. Yep. Fluffy agrees with that. So, I'm going to probably crack that line in the rear, have her pump this until I can get pressure out back. Then we'll braid bleed each caliper up front. Put the wheels back on, guys. And it's road trip time. When I say pump it five times, give it one, two, three, four, five, and hold it down as hard as you can until I say let up. And then do it five more times. Are you ready? Okay. Hit it.
Holding.
>> Do it again. Feel the pedal move a little that time.
>> Okay. Well, keep pumping up. Well, everybody, we're a day into the future here. Last night, me and uh college girl T, young JT. We got the brakes mostly bled out of this thing. Front brakes are working good. The rear brakes, unfortunately, are going to need some attention, but for now, I've got enough to run it up and down the road to stop.
So, that's good. I've got my Colorado parked here because, of course, this truck also has no reverse, but that's fine. I knew that going into this. The guy said the transmission is junk. And he wasn't wrong. It definitely is. I don't know how many forward gears it has, though, cuz I've never been able to stop it. So, I've never taken it on the road. That all changes today.
So, friends, in simple terms, today get these front tires on this truck and Mrs. JT is going to drive her new truck for the first time.
Well, hi.
>> Hi.
You ready to drive this truck?
>> You know it.
>> Okay.
Well, >> let me get this tire on and we'll try that.
>> You know that's still on from last night.
>> See, you can't be hating on that light.
>> Not the lights, the batteries. They should last forever.
>> Well, they should.
>> Okay, she's on her own. Here's a fun fact.
Yes.
>> Which you don't know this, but I'm going to tell you anyway. So, I was looking at this thing yesterday.
>> Yes.
>> Going, man. It's got AC. It's got a compressor over there. I wonder. So, sure enough, it's been retrofitted to 134. So, what I what did I do? I went and got a case at 134. I put two cans in this thing. Guys, this 83 diesel truck has working AC.
Ain't that something? All right. So, you want to take the Colorado and pull this thing out and I'll steer this backwards.
>> Sure.
>> It's easy. I'll show you how it's done.
>> Okay.
want to go for a ride?
>> Yes, I want to go for a ride.
>> Let's go.
>> You got the proof of insurance and all that?
>> Uh, no.
>> Okay. Well, we'll probably be fine.
>> It'll be fine. again.
>> I'm not even wearing a seat belt right now.
>> No reverse.
>> No reverse.
>> Sure does go into drive. Nice.
>> Oo.
>> Yeah. Oh, yeah. We stop just fine with this thing.
>> Yeah.
>> So, now it works.
Now, I got to take it easy. I don't want to lose my fuel canister back there.
>> This feels extremely safe.
>> Oh, it will be.
See how many gears it actually has.
>> Looks like one.
>> Exactly. None. No gears.
>> First gear.
>> Well, since we can't back up, we got to go all the way to the end of the road and turn around and come back. So, >> yeah. But >> I guess as far as driving this to Bran's house, that's going to be a no.
>> That's going to be a little rough.
>> Do the transmission. It would take days get this to Brian's house.
>> Come on now.
>> 15 mph.
>> Where's your sense of adventure?
>> Well, >> oh dear.
>> At least we're going.
>> Yeah. I mean, I'm happy about that.
>> That's pretty good.
We should turn out our air conditioning.
Yeah. Oh.
>> Oh, that's cold.
>> That's cold. Cold air.
>> And that's not even because of the 50° outside. That's actual >> I know. I can tell.
>> 30° cold air coming out of there.
>> I don't know. This is a little too fancy for me. It's got air conditioning.
>> Power >> tilt steering.
>> Power locks and windows. Tilt steering.
This is way too fancy.
You want to drive it home?
>> Maybe.
>> I don't know if I can.
>> Yeah, you can.
>> I don't know if I have the patience to drive it.
>> Just don't go 100. Now, here. Watch where we're going here. Now, we got to borrow the family farm driveway in such a way because we can't turn around because we can't back up. So, we're just going to sneak right through here.
>> Oops.
>> There's a cone right there. So, I know not to hit that small apple tree.
>> Perfect.
That's the cold. I got to shut that off.
All right. You want to drive it home?
>> Sure, why not?
Okay, I see that.
>> All right. Now, I'm driving shotgun here.
>> Gas pedal pushes a little hard. You'll get used to it, though.
>> All right.
>> You ain't got to push it far to get going up to 15. So, is >> there cruise on this?
>> Yeah, it does have cruise. I don't know if it works. I've not tried it. Set it to cruise on uh 18 miles an hour.
>> What do you think?
>> Oh, this is comfy.
>> There you're at top speed.
>> I know. I love it.
>> Good.
>> You know my favorite TV show, The Nukes of Hazard?
>> Yes.
>> You know what Wayan Jennings says at the very end of the song?
>> What's that?
>> They don't understand why they keep showing my hands and not my face on TV.
>> Say that again.
>> I love it. My buddy Marks, he's like, "When am I going to get to see Mrs. JT?"
Not that he hasn't seen you, but >> never.
>> He says, "It's just like the song."
>> Yes.
>> Don't understand. I keep showing my hands and not my face. Well, there you go. We got your hands.
>> That's perfect. Eventually, I'm going really slow.
>> So, what do you think of this old bird?
>> I love it.
>> I can feel this. This tire over here definitely has a won to it, but >> there's a little wobble. You know, I've only >> So, I figure I got to put another $45 to $6,500 into this truck that we may already have $45 to $6,500 into >> and it'll be almost ready for the road, >> maybe.
>> But one piece at a time, we'll just keep copying >> famous words, famous songs from famous songwriters. One piece at a time.
>> I love it.
>> And it cost me It didn't cost you a dime.
>> No.
>> No. Well, we got a fuel tank ordered so I can quit sucking out of the fuel tank back there because both I did scope both tanks, guys. Both tanks in this have are absolutely junk inside. They're terrible. Again, I was told that they were. So, I expected that. But once I get a fuel tank in it and once we get the transmission in it, then we can honestly just start driving this thing and pick away at problems when they get here. So, Oh, we made it back home.
Let's pull in >> brakes. Yes, you do.
>> I didn't turn the blinker on. Sorry.
>> Well, it doesn't work anyway. Okay, perfect.
>> Blinkers and brake lights need to be fixed as well, but we'll address all that stuff. So, why don't you just pull this? Why don't you just stop right here?
>> Right here.
>> Cuz then I can I can Yeah. Push brake pedal down. There you go.
>> Shush. Shush.
>> And uh you go ahead and shut her off here.
>> You're good.
>> I love that. It reminds me of my Yukon.
I love the way it feels.
>> That's good to drive it.
>> Good. I'm glad. And it's honestly I think the seat's more comfortable than the Yukon.
>> I don't know. them leather seats are. I mean, that's a nice old Yukon. Make no mistake, but I don't know. I've never been a big fan of leather seats. I kind of like something that doesn't stick to me when it's 100.
>> Well, that's >> And now that we got AC, it'll never be 100 in this truck. So, there's that.
>> Well, guys, I think that's where we're going to leave you today. I'm going to push this thing into the shed backwards so I don't have I guess it doesn't matter. I got a pusher to pull it one way or the other because it don't go backwards and it don't go very fast frontwards. But, I got a fuel tank ordered. But I'd like to get a fuel tank in this and maybe I can get Brian to snatch his trailer up, bring it back over here so we can haul this to his house. I do have a transmission for it so we can get a transmission in it and then I'll drive it home for Brian's cuz it's like I said, she's all plated and legal right now. So that's good. We don't have to worry about Johnny Law coming down on us, at least for that.
Other problems, sure, but not that. So, well, what do you say? Mission accomplished. Successful today?
>> Absolutely.
>> Right on. Well, I like the way that sounds. All right, guys. Tune in next time. Plenty more to come. And I still got an S10 and a Grand Prix I got to get finished. But so this this kind of took precedence because it's Mammoth. So well, that's how she goes. But guys, I'm going to get to all of them. Thanks for watching today. We'll see you next time.
I am smart and I'm smart. I'm selfsmarted basically by myself basically from nature and doing different things. I was self like self-learn
