The entire Everest economy relies on wealthy tourists purchasing and experience while a local workforce absorbs the brutal physical toll required to make it happen. Take the Kumbu icefall. It is a constantly shifting maze of deep creasses and towering ice blocks, making it one of the most hazardous sections of the entire climb. A paying client might navigate this danger zone a couple of times. A sherpa has to make the crossing again and again, hauling gear through the unstable ice to build the camps higher up.
