A Nuremberg Masterpiece from 1610 — the Forgotten Art of Michel Man #shorts #history #collectablesIndexado:
One casket. One name. Four hundred years of history. This fire-gilded brass casket from Nuremberg, circa 1610/20, is far more than a container — it is a signed masterwork by the locksmith and craftsman Michel Man, whose name is engraved into the lid and has survived to this day. Four faceted ball feet, finely engraved figures in contemporary and partly Turkish costume, two classicising heroes with shield and sabre on the lid — and on the base an engraved townscape that opens a unique window into the world of the early 17th century. The blued lock mechanism with four moving tumblers is a technical masterpiece of its era. The interior retains its original decorative paper lining. An exceptional collector's piece at the intersection of decorative arts, locksmithing and early modern cultural history — now at Hermann Historica auction. 🔔 Subscribe and activate notifications — we regularly showcase extraordinary objects from the world of international auctions. At the start of the 17th century, Mihelman moved to Nuremberg and opened a workshop there in Werd, just outside the city gates, for the production of miniature caskets. These miniature caskets are what we associate with Mihelman today. The Mihelman caskets are a further development and miniaturization of the classic Nuremberg casket. What we have here is a typical etched Nuremberg casket. These pieces have survived in quite large numbers, and they were developed around 1530 and then produced for almost 100 years in nearly unchanged form. They are very simply made from bent sheet metal with prefabricated lock elements. I'll just open it up. That's roughly what it looks like.
And Mihelman carefully adopted this methodology back then, successfully managed to miniaturize the process, and brought it into a stunningly decorated artistic form. Take a moment to gently open up the outer cover, revealing the hidden keyhole. This is Mihelman's specialty, along with the gilded surface and the finely engraved scenes. Here, specifically, we have all around depictions of Turks in fine Turkish costume. On the lid, two heroic figures from antiquity are depicted, a typical motif from the Mihelman workshop, created around 1620 in Nuremberg.
