This fire-gilded brass casket from Nuremberg, circa 1610/20, is far more than a container — it is a signed masterwork by the locksmith and craftsman Michel Man, whose name is engraved into the lid and has survived to this day. Four faceted ball feet, finely engraved figures in contemporary and partly Turkish costume, two classicising heroes with shield and sabre on the lid — and on the base an engraved townscape that opens a unique window into the world of the early 17th century. The blued lock mechanism with four moving tumblers is a technical masterpiece of its era. The interior retains its original decorative paper lining.
