[00:00:02]This is the 3.7 you saw on the short.

[00:00:04]It's got 110,000 mi on it. Came out of a 2016 Lincoln MKX.

[00:00:09]And we're going to tear this thing down and we're going to talk about a failure that it had.

[00:00:13]>> [music] [music] >> Okay, so it came out of the Lincoln. If you didn't see the short with the Lincoln in it, I'll leave it connected to this video so you can go see it. This came in for a timing job.

[00:00:31]And when Chris, when Chris was working here, pulled the oil filter, it had metal in the oil filter. Pulled the VVT solenoids, there was metal all over the screens, and I will leave a link to Ray's video. I think he did a video on that.

[00:00:45]To where they pulled them out and you could see it.

[00:00:47]So, but it wasn't making any noise.

[00:00:50]That's That was the weird thing. So, we're going to tear this thing apart and see where the metal came from. First thing we're going to do, we're going to take off that valve cover right there, and you can see it's already unbolted.

[00:01:02]From where they took it out of the car, they took the intake manifold off of it.

[00:01:06]So, we're just going to pull up on the valve cover.

[00:01:14]Here's the inside. It doesn't look so bad.

[00:01:24]Let's take a look with the light.

[00:01:35]I see some some signs of deposit. See it up there in the corner?

[00:01:43]That schmoo may be from when the valve cover was off of it before.

[00:01:51]The camshafts look okay.

[00:01:54]All right. A little bit of a backstory, they were using AMSOIL but they were using the OE version of AMSOIL and they went like 30,000 mi and you don't go 30,000 mi on OE. You don't even go 30,000 mi on Signature Series.

[00:02:09]I wouldn't even go 25,000 on it like it says. That's just me though. But, let's get the other side off.

[00:02:16]Oh, remember this is a front-wheel drive vehicle, so if it was in the vehicle, this would be the driver side.

[00:02:22]So, not so bad in there either. There's a little bit of wear looks like right there. We'll take a look down in here as well.

[00:02:31]Actually, it doesn't look so bad so far.

[00:44:51]We rebuild it, I guess. It's It's a buildable core.

[00:45:08]The adapters, some gears, some torn up timing belt. I'm sure we can make something out of it. You got a welder?

[00:45:25]Really nothing wrong with the block.

[00:45:28]It actually looks really good inside here.

[00:45:31]This can be cleaned up. The block will be fine. Ray had a good point.

[00:45:39]This is This is salvageable. We can rebuild this. Now, let's go over here and take a look.

[00:45:48]All right, so we got the parts laid out, the important parts anyway.

[00:45:53]That was where the metal came from.

[00:45:59]I don't know how it does that. I've never seen it do that before.

[00:46:02]I mean, I've seen camshafts like the lobes wipe out or Or the not the front journal.

[00:46:09]>> Not the front journal.

[00:46:10]It must have gotten something in there.

[00:46:12]It there's The it's more up in the little oil galley, right?

[00:46:17]>> galley, yep. So, something was sending metal in there and then it was carving away more of that oil groove. Yeah. And this is >> No, no, no, no, no, no, wait a minute.

[00:46:24]What Is that groove supposed to be there? No.

[00:46:30]Okay.

[00:46:33]So, it's got holes in here, so oil came the phaser failed and sent oil through those little holes which were supposed to oil this galley right here.

[00:46:45]But it filled that camshaft full of steel from the phaser. Then that steel ended up beside of those holes in the cam riding around in that groove, just chewing the daylights out of it. And you know, it wasn't making any noise, remember? No. No, it wasn't making noise. But the head's fine, I mean It had It had VVT problems cuz it >> It did. It had timing codes.

[00:47:06]>> Yeah, and that's why we were going to do the timing chain and the water pump and everything. And that's why we got timing codes because of that right there.

[00:47:14]But crankshaft looks good.

[00:47:17]Everything looks good, I mean.

[00:47:21]There's on the pistons pistons don't look bad. Normal wear for pistons.

[00:47:29]I mean, they don't look bad at all.

[00:47:31]That's probably from me picking it up.

[00:47:36]Normal wear?

[00:47:41]But that's that was the problem.

[00:47:44]All right, so there's the 3.7 L teardown, 110,000 mi on it. Apparently, we had a failed VCT phaser.

[00:47:51]And it just completely wiped out the cam and sent metal through the entire system. The oil filter was full of metal.

[00:47:58]The uh the oil filter was full of metal.

[00:48:02]And when they pulled the VCT solenoids out, they had metal all inside of them, too.

[00:48:08]And that's why it had metal inside of it.

[00:48:11]Because it failed and had failed camshaft. But, that's why it was here for some timing codes and then ended up getting a new engine. And now Ray owns that car. And Ray is actually selling that car. It has a new engine in it with 100,000 mi, so 10,000 mi less. New water pump, new timing set, everything's good to go. So, that being said, I love you guys.
