The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory monitors Kilauea Volcano using tilt meters to measure ground inflation and deflation, tracking seismic tremor, and analyzing SO2 emissions to forecast eruptions. During the pause period after episode 47 ended on May 15th, the UWD tilt meter recorded approximately 9.5 micro radians of inflationary tilt, indicating magma accumulation beneath the summit. Forecast models predicted episode 48 would occur between May 22nd and May 26th, 2026, based on these monitoring data points.

Aloha and good afternoon, good evening, good morning wherever you're at. Welcome to Taco Tuesday edition of our monitoring stream.
Uh Johnson says if that stuff works.
Claritin. He's talking about his allergies there.
I say sometimes, sometimes not. I used to have big time allergies and then when I moved to the Big Island, they went bye-bye. But Terra still has them when it comes to the Vog.
I take the Kirkland brand of Ayar FX.
Yeah, some people say that stuff works good.
As you can see, we got P pistoning going on out of the north vent right now.
Lots of S2 SO2.
And as promised earlier today, I said I was going to do an update because USGS did not get to the update in a timely fashion. As a matter of fact, they waited almost until 10:00 a.m.
about half hour after we were done. And we waited a while.
So, here it is. Without further ado, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory Daily Update, US Geological Survey, Tuesday, May 19th, 2026 at 9:56 a.m.
Boy, somebody forgot to wake up when the alarm clock went off. They hit the snooze a few times.
Summary: The Holly Mahu Mahu eruption at Kilaway is paused. Glow was visible from both erupted vents overnight.
Not so much the north vent, but the south vent was very glowy, as we'll probably see again tonight. Inflation is underway. Forecast model suggested episode 48 sometime between, drum roll, Friday, May 22nd and Tuesday, May 26th.
Yay. So, guess what? I'm still back in the game. I threw my hat in the ring for the 26th. And by golly, it might happen then because USGS says so, right?
The eruption is paused. Glow visible.
Yep. Yep. Yep. Um episode ended on May 15th. Oh, I'm sorry. And forecast uh suggest that episode 48 will occur between Friday, May 22nd and Tuesday.
So, we have a pizza Friday window to taco Tuesday. How exciting is that?
No significant activity has been noted along Kilawa's east rift zone or southwest rift zone.
So low-level seismic tremor continues during the current current pause as you can see over here on the mainstream in the lower lefthand corner. There's a little bit of pistoning going on here.
You can kind of see a little bit of a action there going. Right now it's the north end. North Finland is doing a gas show.
Uh, earthquake activity below Kilaway Summit is at low at this time. Kilaway summit inflation is underway but is also slowed slightly over the past day. And that's what I was talking about this morning. Maybe they're holding back for a little bit to see how that little um that little leveling off in the tilt was since the end of lava founding episode on uh episode 47 on May 15th. The Yukahuna tilt meter UWD has tracked approximately 9.5 micro radians of inflationary tilt. This instrument recorded 15.6 micro radians of deflationary tilt uh during episode 47.
So again, when I was looking at that tilt chart earlier this morning, I was kind of guesstimating around 10. So not far off there with the eruption pause.
Now, SO2 emission rates from the summit is likely now varying between 1,000 to 5,000 tons per day, which is just basically the copy and paste version of their update every time.
Zesty Sump is in there now. Johnson's is in there now. Terra is in there now.
Aloha everybody. Zesty Sump says, "Serving size small, medium, large."
Yeah, these portions are zombie portion to make the most with the host. Taco toast. Cheers, my friend. Lurkers.
Well, we're going to get to that after a little bit. Tara is currently shopping for some groceries right now for our Taco Tuesday event. Johnson's Adventure says, "Aloha, Mama Bear." So, yeah, taking a look at the uh let's go back here to the tilt chart. Here we go. UWD right here on the screen.
Let's take a look at the overall here.
You can see we kind of had that downturn this morning, but since then, you can see she's almost gone straight up. So, since then, it's probably we're pretty close to 10 microdians right there, I would say. If you just look, you count from right about here, you got about five there. You got about almost three and a half there and another two and a half there. So looking pretty close at 10 micro radians of uh recovered tilt there since the end of episode 47.
So yeah, that's basically the update as promised in a nutshell. I'm apologize on behalf of the USGS even though I shouldn't have to. Uh but yeah, it's there now. So we're all good.
Everything's fine. I know our show is kind of based on that that update and some people were kind of feeling this morning waiting for it, waiting for it, waiting for it, and then it never happened. So, I do apologize, but sometimes we have to live life and kind of do real life things even though USGS is doing their own thing. You know what I'm saying?
I kind of commend those people that work for the USGS. They do work very hard to do this stuff. So, we all appreciate them and we give our thanks and mahalos to USGS for everything that they do.
Going back over here to the mainstream, looks like it might be a fantastic sunset up there at the caldera with diamonds on the screen right now here about 2,000 ft below the summit. It is raining, folks. It is raining.
Uh, Zamp says, "Tara, I'll take an orange Coke and some gummy bears." Well, they happen to have those there. Or those squishy marshmallow strawberries.
Happy shopping. Yes, they do. They do have all that there.
All right. So, what I'm going to do now is going to start rolling out a couple taco songs and a couple of our oldies but goodies, followed by more taco songs when Tara gets back here and we'll start uh cooking. So, all right. Here we go.

Alex in the doorway.
Bare feet on the cold. What floor? Red plane in his small hands.
Heart already passed the door. He draws a line through darkness from the whole life to the yard.
One breath in a wild throw and it cuts right through the dark.
Fly red plane over my house, over my name, over my doubts.
Every time I let you go, you climb so high.
And you sleep on the roof under all those stars.
Night hums like a secret.
Streets so still it hardly seems real.
Alex counts to 30 just to stretch the way it feels.
He swears the wings glow silver when he leaves his hand and spins like the sky is calling softly like it knows him from within.
Fly over my house over my D.
over my house. Every time I let you go, you climb so high and you see on the roof on the road.
roof under all those stars. How do you find that rooftop? Through the wind and the dark and the rain. Do the constellations guide you? Do they whisper my first name?
He can't reach that high yet, but he'll get there someday. Till then, he just keeps throwing. And the sky just keeps his plane.
Fly over my house, over my fear, over my scars.
Every time you go, you climb so high.
And you sleep on the roof of your own.
Always on the roof under all those stars.
Will you sleep on the roof under all the stars?
On the shoulder of a mountain, tiny needle watching slow every breath the rock is taking.
You're the first one who would know.
You keep tracing every shiver, every lean, each hidden load.
Little watcher in the lava, guarding stories in the stone.
Move till me. Reading every rise, every sway.
When the ground writes secret letters, you're the one who hears them say okay. You're talking meters.
Still you shout across the grave.
When the world pretends it stay, you can feel it drift away.
Night shift under distant starlight.
Red dust on your metal frame.
Clouds roll in. The radios chatter, but your numbers stay the same.
You remember quiet summers.
You remember restless days when the slope began to whisper.
You were first to see a change.

I go to stay to the bra at the stand by Tuesday and holy day right where I stand.
Red glow, cold screen, midnight, big dream.
Hey, USGS V3. Can we watch you all night?
Pixel lash drifting sideways through the wind and the white.

Stay with me. Stay with me till the break of day.

Faded plant on bare feet.
Phone glow in my arms.
We can't sleep. We just stare at that restless hazy dome.
Every frame another prayer for the place we call our home. We can't see it through the smokiness, but we're here. We're still here, you know. We're waiting on the north end for blow like a heartbeat on the stone. I remember those days where they used to zoom in during the trade winds late at night.
Every pixel felt like we were standing right there in the orange line.
Oh, is scrolling through the still shots.
Chat bar running like a creek.

Oh, that light.
Static sky pixel rain click to watch it again.
I am miles from the mountain, but I wait for the moving frame. Little scream in the dark room is the only way I say your name. Sometimes all I get is gray air.
Just a cloud where the fire should be.
Still I stare at the empty like it's staring back at me. Every refresh, a tiny pre is there a glow out there. Out there the USDA feed your camera. Take me where my body can't go. Through the white out, through the weather. Let the hidden river show.
Far away from the lava. I can feel the breathing.
See the glow in the north. Only this way. Only this way.
This way. I land.
Sometimes it's just broken silence, frozen frame from another night.
Sometimes mountains through the curtains throwing sparks into the overcast light.
I hold my breath for the bright part, for the flicker breaking through. When the valley turns centers and the dark turns red with you, every refresh, a tiny pray.
Is there a glow out there? out there.

Down where the black sand breaks, there's a mouth in stone.
No signs, no names, just a cold wind blown.
Men went in with rope and pride. Came out as a rumor. Maybe some never found the light. Some never came back. Baby, don't go alone.
Don't follow the sound.
The ground goes soft. When the sky comes down the deep dark abyss, you will disappear.
Never go looking for the Hawaii holes, the deep dark abyss.
You will disappear.
Never go looking for the Hawaii holes.
I saw a torch cut thin by a crack in the rock.
A voice said, "Turn around."
But the echo talked, helmets left in the dirt, rope burns on the reef.
You chase one man surren.
Don't go alone.
Don't trust that glow.
One wrong step and the deep says go the deep dark abyss.
You will disappear.
Never go looking for the Hawaii holes.
The deep dark abyss.
You will disappear.
Never go looking for the Hawaii hoes.
If you hear your name from the black below, cover your mouth and leave it alone.
No map can save you.
No prayer combined that hungry dark one's body and mind the deep dark abyss.

Midnight in the scrapyard. Mass on green and rowby row. My shoes on the broken floor. Something weird comes through the door. Tiny hands and crooked teeth dancing past on shattered seeds. I laugh and I lose my nerve. Every giggle takes a swerve. Spin it round. Shake that gloom. Green flash pops the room. Hold my hand. Count to three. Something wild is coming free.
The laser too strange to ever shame. Dance it out and call my name to the broken arcade. A ghost in a purple parade. I drop a coin, it laughs back loud. Moonlight spitters through the crowd. Your eyes go bright like stolen glass. You spin me once, then let me pass. Every place is a dope deny.
Every monster feels just right. Spin it round. Shake that gloom. Green flash pops the room. Hold my hand. Count to three. Something wild is coming free.
If you laser too strange to ever shame, dance it out and call my name neat.

Datom down no heat.
Morning lights go red. Too much spin ahead. I can't map this mess. Every path looks dead. Metal nerves are shaking.
Panels start to fade. Little droid keep talking. Maybe we get saved. Turn, turn, turn too fast.
Hold on, hold on tight.
One wrong move and we lose the lines and I do.
>> Spinning through the dark.
>> Count the sharks and sparks.
>> Still we move along.
But the pulse goes on.
Don't trust that machine. It's flying through the noise. Cold steel in the walls, making borrowed choices. Hands on every lever, eyes on every trace. One more glitch and we disappear in space.
Turn, turn, turn too fast.
Hold on, hold on tight.
One wrong move and we lose the line tonight. I I >> We're spinning through the dark.
>> We're doomed. We're doomed.
>> Count the sharks and sparks. We're doomed. We're doomed.
