STL's upper_bound returns an iterator to the first element greater than the key, effectively counting elements ≤ key. lower_bound returns the first element ≥ key. The difference between these iterators gives the count of elements in a range. For example, with sorted y-values [2,3,5,7,9,13,25], upper_bound(7) - lower_bound(5) = 3 (elements 5,7,9 are in [5,7]).
