Management runs as city officials arrive to inspect Life at Jackson Square for slumlord conditions

[00:00:05]Houston city officials, along with Dr. Matthews, visited the Life at Jackson Square apartment complex today after residents complained of slumlord conditions throughout the property.

[00:00:16]During the walk-through, one resident showed officials a fire-damaged apartment she said she has continued living in since a fire in December while still paying rent at the complex.

[00:00:27]As city officials arrived at the leasing office, management tried to leave and police had to get involved. Oh, where the hell she going? I'm not going anywhere. She running, too?

[00:00:41]Come on, I told y'all don't bring these people in here. Now, now y'all done got to play nice now. Y'all here want to close doors and stuff. Get y'all asses in here.

[00:01:04]Houston City Councilwoman and soon-to-be Harris County Attorney Abby Kaiman also urged residents to continue filing complaints so inspectors can investigate conditions inside units. If you live in a slumlord complex, file those 311 reports so that the city of Houston or Harris County, if you're in the outside of the city of Houston, can take action without the authorization of that property owner. Citations are expected, which can turn into arrest warrants for management if owners do not cooperate.

Look how fast and quicker that we moved and we were able to get the city officials here based on the videos that we showed from last Friday. And then they can't believe all the stuff that they said. You got boarded apartments where people are living in.

[00:02:03]You got rats. You got road mold. You have roaches. You have unkept grass looking like Jumanji level 25. So, it's a lot that's dealing with this property. Can you speak on the apartment that is burned out and somebody's still living in that? And that right there is crazy work because she's paying $1,200 to live in a burnt smoked out apartment.

[00:02:29]Like I had to walk out of there because that smell was so bad.

[00:02:40]And the solution is that ordinance and letting them know that you're not going to do this in our city. So, you may as well get your pocketbooks ready cuz you're about to spend and you're going to get this thing kept up off the city of Houston's legal is going to be getting involved.
