During the Apollo 11 mission, astronaut Buzz Aldrin accidentally snapped off a circuit breaker inside the lunar module. This breaker controlled the ascent engine, which was essential for returning to Earth. Without the switch, the engine could not be activated, leaving the astronauts trapped on the moon.

A 40¢ pen saved Apollo 11Indexed:
Apollo 11 almost failed because of a broken switch — and a 40¢ felt-tip pen saved the mission. Just before liftoff from the Moon, Buzz Aldrin's backpack snapped off the circuit breaker that armed the ascent engine. The famous Fisher Space Pen NASA carried with them? Untouched the whole time. The pen that actually saved them was an ordinary Duro felt-tip marker. Today both pens are in the Smithsonian. Only one of them is famous. The wrong one. NASA's Apollo 11 mission almost failed because of a broken switch. And what saved the astronauts wasn't the famous space pen or NASA technology. It was a felt-tip marker.
You see, right before leaving the moon, Buzz Aldrin accidentally snapped [music] off a circuit breaker inside the lunar module. That same breaker controlled the ascent [music] engine.
The engine that would get them off the moon.
No switch, no engine, no way home. Just two astronauts trapped on the moon inside a spacecraft that worked >> [music] >> except for one broken switch. Aldrin needed something thin enough to push the breaker, but not metal.
What he grabbed was a felt-tip marker made by a company called Duro.
He pushed the pen into the broken switch socket and armed the engine.
Minutes later, Apollo 11 lifted off the moon. The astronauts came home because of a marker.
But, that's not the pen people remember.
History made the famous space pen legendary. Not the one that actually worked.
