The lake is famous for its vivid turquoise color, which changes throughout the year depending on sunlight, weather, and mineral levels in the water. Big Almaty Lake was formed thousands of years ago as a result of tectonic activity and natural damming. It is surrounded by towering Tian Shan peaks, including Sovetov Peak, Ozyorny Peak, and Tourist Peak, creating a dramatic alpine landscape. The lake is an important freshwater reservoir that supplies drinking water to Almaty, which is why swimming, fishing, and boating are restricted. This protection has helped preserve the area’s clean environment and wildlife. The region around the lake is home to diverse mountain species such as marmots, foxes, ibex, golden eagles, and rare snow leopards in remote areas of the national park. The high altitude and clear atmosphere also made the area ideal for scientific research during the Soviet era, leading to the construction of the nearby Tien Shan Astronomical Observatory. In winter, the lake partially freezes and becomes surrounded by snow-covered peaks, while autumn is considered the most photogenic season due to the golden mountain forests contrasting with the blue water.
