The Masters of the Universe film demonstrates the value of practical production techniques in modern filmmaking. Rather than relying heavily on CGI and green screen, the production built full physical sets with every mark on the ground being intentional. The set designer and crew ensured that even behind-the-scenes areas looked authentic, creating an immersive environment. Fight choreography was developed through collaboration with stunt legends Liang Yang and Andy Lister, with each character having a unique fighting style based on their physical characteristics. The production embraced 'fun violence' as a philosophy, treating combat as creative play rather than purely brutal action. This approach creates sequences that feel real with consequences while remaining entertaining.

I might work with you again. We might work together.
>> I I should be so lucky.
>> Maybe. Well, I should be [laughter] so lucky. We should be so lucky that it's Masters of the Universe part two. There were some teasers of of a few of those where if you pay attention, there's actually a lot of Easter eggs in this movie.
>> [music] >> Welcome to the castle and welcome to a Castle Grayskull production. [music] Good morning. Good to be here. Yeah.
Thanks for having us. So, we we all watched it last night. How was that being in a setting with surrounded by fans, you know, everyone from toy collectors to just true fans of the show?
I thought it was great cuz cuz I I loved He-Man when I was a kid. Yeah. And I loved the movie. I I was so happy the way it turned out.
>> Mhm. Uh cuz there's no there's no given, you know, you read the script, you do the filming of it, you wait, and you see how it turns out. But, I loved it, and I there were moments when I wanted to applaud, and and because the fans are there, they were doing it, so I was doing it with them cuz I wanted to. So, it was I thought it was good.
>> The energy was so amazing last night.
>> Oh, yeah.
So, it matched. Everyone was on the same page.
>> Yeah, and we were all there. We were all fans, yourself included, both you guys and and then us. When we walked in, there was bags on everyone's seats, and everyone got a sword, and that really kind of invited that, I think, that response from the the crowd, you know.
And then as as each of you made your first debut, Right. you know, it was it was I like how how the movie really sort of It drops you in pretty quickly.
>> It Yeah, it drops you in, and also it gave all the characters their moments of introduction.
>> Yeah. Yeah, it was cool. They didn't just show up. There was a A bit, you know, it was it was cool the way they introduced them. It it it immersed you almost instantaneously. Yeah, yeah, for sure. Yeah, for sure.
And so you grew up with Masters, you know?
>> Yeah, yeah, I'm I'm older than John.
Wait, how how old are you, John? Uh I'm 38.
Okay, I'm 46. Yeah. Yeah, so yeah. Yeah, I'm I'm a little older, [laughter] yeah.
Yeah, I'm born in 1980 and I I did grow up and I brought my This is my actual Fisto toy that I had when I was a kid. I got it from my mother's basement and brought it with me to the premiere.
So yeah, I played with these toys. I had the I had the Skeletor castle. Oh, wow.
Yeah, I didn't have He-Man's castle was green, Greyskull. I didn't have that one. A friend of mine had that one. I was so jealous, but Skeletor's castle had like a microphone thing, like a snake that you could talk into and it would distort your voice.
>> Yes. Uh yeah, all these toys they were they were >> Is that what they did for Skeletor's voice? They used that old microphone, yeah. Yeah, exactly.
But I grew up with an older brother who was a huge fan, so we watched all the cartoons, read all the comic books, and we had all the action figures. So I had a Ram Man action figure.
And I remember being super envious of how big his arms were. Yeah. The springy legs as well, you know. So it became your mission in life.
>> Yes, yes. I And now you're there.
>> [laughter] >> I think when I saw the the audition tape that I had to do for it, I thought, "Oh, yes, I played with this guy as a child. Okay. Well, you know, in preparation, if should I book the role, I'll just keep doing my arms." Yeah. So a lot of tendonitis, but >> [laughter] >> it was well worth it.
The The way they let you guys be your characters, Ram Man specifically, right?
Like down to the legs, you know?
>> Yeah.
They they really leaned into, I think, the the authentic versions of your characters.
>> Yeah, and that's what Richard, the designer, talked about when he was doing the cuz we had to come in multiple times during prep for costume fittings cuz they had to get all the armor and the helmets and the fists and all that they had to get it right and it the first versions weren't good enough so they had to like keep fixing it and Yeah. and getting it perfect. Um as the costumes and the sets were being built, I could see you know this is this is the cartoon and Richard was like, "Well yeah, what else am I going to do? Like I'm just going to do what's there." You know, of of course he makes it cinematic and he makes it alive but like you were saying he's he's being so true to what it is and I appreciate that as a fan. 100% I I've worked with Richard before and he he is a genius, absolute genius but every costume all the Skull Knights, all the Cyborgs, all the other characters seen in the backgrounds um Yeah.
they're all slightly different costumes.
They're all slightly different and every mark on the costumes is intentional.
Yeah. Every small little nuance and if you blink you'll miss them. And it's so there was so much love and care that went into the character designs and the costume designs. And I think with Ram Man I I like the color. I really like the color. Yeah, it was it's very empowering to put put on the armor and the helmet. I can't hear particularly well. I have to look at you to to hear you. Oh okay. [laughter] Yeah, I can only hear you if I'm looking at you but Yeah. Yeah, so it was incredible. Yeah.
Well, at least you could see. Yes. Yes.
>> Cuz Kojo plays Tri-Klops he and also James who plays Mekanek they couldn't see cuz they had these helmets over their eyes and they had a rough time during the shoot but you know.
I think in terms of putting on the costume I think we had the least amount of time. Oh god, yeah. Yeah.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah, some people have had had a lot of hours in the makeup chair and Yeah, we just showed up 10 minutes before shooting. Yeah, absolutely. We had a great time. I mean they they went to work.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah, absolutely.
It was also refreshing. I noticed on the way that the film was put together, there was inspiration drawn from lots of different sources to kind of pay respect to the journey that brought us here really, from the mini comics Right, yeah.
>> to the Filmation cartoon, the 2002 cartoon, the Masters of the Universe Classics is what they used.
>> the the movie. The '87 movie, absolutely. And you got your names from the card backs on the Classics toys.
>> Yes. Yeah, true.
>> And the way that that was woven in >> Yeah, very neatly. They sort of paid tribute to every stepping stone along the way Mhm. and and did it beautifully, so subtly and and yeah.
Really well done. And comedically, you know, it's >> Comedically as well, [laughter] for sure. They and they and they didn't hold back on comedy, I noticed too. No, without going they didn't go overboard either. It was it it it's it feels true and real, but funny and fun as well.
Yeah. Yeah. And and it gave you a chance to kind of react. So it's a way to kind of bring that in in a way that felt natural, right?
With the names, for example.
>> Right, yeah.
>> Right, Adam comes back and he's calling you names you don't recognize and you in fact have real names.
And for you guys to respond to comedically as well. You know, he he's you guys look puzzled.
>> Yeah. And then ultimately like towards the end we also embraced the names that he gave us when he was a kid.
>> Absolutely.
>> the bad guys. Yeah.
I mean, I think fans will be excited to see how that kind of comes together at the end as well.
>> Yeah, I was hoping that fans and people in general would like this film. Having seen it now, I feel so much more confident that they will. Oh, yeah.
>> Cuz just being a fan myself, I I was in tears when the first transformation scene happened.
With the sword. My god, it just the way they put it together with the music and everything. I just it worked. I mean, that's what they're trying to do. I had tears streaming down my face like, yes.
[laughter] Yeah. Because I waited 40 years. Because when uh all characters don't see it when it happens and then we see like a surge of energy then we go >> [laughter] >> Yeah.
Yeah.
>> Yeah. I remember thinking at the time when I when we see this in the cinema, it's going to be you know, monumental. Yeah, yeah.
I'm getting goosebumps now I'm thinking about >> One and that's the thing. I mean, we we've been waiting for this movie a lot of us since '87 but I suppose you guys were paying attention to that too wanting to >> Yeah, absolutely. watch it at the very least. I just wanted to and then when when the the auditions were coming about and my agent sent me Fisto and I was like, oh yeah, I do I actually kind of Mhm. I should play Fisto.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah. Uh it was say similar to you like you you know that yeah. And and you know The casting in general I think is perfect like spot on. I think um when I was about to do my audition tape, I just spammed a load of push-ups. Yeah.
[laughter] Yeah. Yeah, from the I love the cartoons first. I remember seeing that movie in '87. I was seven at the time. I was in Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands. Okay.
Small country where I used to live for a few years when I was a kid. I'm I'm from Iceland but I used to live there as well. And I went to the little red cinema house which is also a theater.
Okay. And I saw the movie there and I was just blown away that they had made a movie from my toys. Yeah. From the cartoon. Yeah. And then that movie has its charms. I watched it I watched it before we started filming.
And and now again, I feel like a kid watching this one and I can't I can't I'm in it. I can't >> you're in it. Same, same, yeah. Yeah.
And uh I saw that one through drive-in theater. Amazing. Oh, wow. I've only seen those in the movies. I've never been to one.
>> They're real? That's when you you you're in your car?
>> Yeah. And the audio is just on your radio? Yeah, it was you basically hang a little speaker on your you would roll down the driver side window.
And you would get basically mono sound through a speaker. Wow.
>> And the whole car would but that's what we had, right?
>> Right, right.
>> And often they did it as a double feature. And if I remember correctly, it was uh Adventures in Babysitting followed by Masters of the Universe.
>> [laughter] >> And I I That's a great double feature.
>> Yeah, and truth be told I fell asleep um for cuz I was a kid. I was 6 years old when when that film uh came out and uh but like you said, it um has its charm and it has its own It's another story in the Masters lineage.
>> Right, it's just another take on it, right?
And it was it was really nice to see characters like Karg Yes. Yeah, that was his introduction. Exactly. I like how they brought him back for this one.
Absolutely.
>> plays him is a very good friend of mine.
We've been together since day one. Hung and I have been together since day one.
We started on the same day and we've been in multiple films together. So when I saw his name on the cast sheet, I thought, "Oh my goodness. We're Yeah.
together again." Yeah. [laughter] Amazing.
>> fun when you get to to do another film, right? With somebody that you've worked with before.
>> Yes.
The the thing is with the film industry, it's a it's a big industry but it's a very small world. And you end up just working with very similar people, people you've worked with on previous films and um yeah, it's uh it's it's a tight-knit family, you know. Yeah. I might work with you again.
We might work again. I could I I should be so lucky. Maybe. Well, I should [laughter] be so lucky. We should be so lucky that it's Masters of the Universe part two. I was saying at the after party, um let's let's do this again. Yeah.
[laughter] Yeah, well, we wouldn't mind. We're up for it.
Oh, I mean, the world's set up for it, right? There are so many different directions and I don't think the movie left it in a specific, it's obviously going in this direction, but it could go in a number of different directions.
>> Right. True. Yeah, there's definitely if if people want to see more, there's definitely stuff we can do. Mhm.
I hope they do do it. Yeah. There there's more there. We haven't seen B-Man yet.
>> Mhm. Yeah. [laughter] Just to get that out there. Yeah.
Yeah, I mean, there are a number of characters that are ready to uh to be brought into the into the the world that you guys have already started creating. There were some teasers of of a few of those where if you pay attention, there's actually a lot of Easter eggs in this movie, nodding at various toys that have come out over the years or just different things that that different fans will pick up on. When we started this conversation, I introduced you as the Masters because that is who you you are, right? And that was solidified really for me in the 2002 cartoon. They would refer to the heroic warriors as the Masters.
>> Yeah. Yeah, it's He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, yeah.
>> Yeah. And I think this film really reinforced that in the in the wake of what happens in the opening, right?
Skeletor comes in.
There are some dynamics that change, I feel like, within the maybe the leadership structure Right.
>> on the Masters' side, and both of you guys have to really step up as I don't think they outright call it out.
But, you know, you're for example, I I was looking at your uh position as sort of the general. Right, yeah, because someone else is not there and someone has to step up. Yeah, you're absolutely right. Yeah.
>> And then, >> [clears throat] >> as well, Ram Man is, you know, he's just he knows he needs to step up and be that leader, right?
>> I think it's that establishing scene of when when Ooh. When things are getting attacked.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah.
>> give too many spoilers, but Yeah.
>> Yeah, but it's I think that establishing scene really shows actually these guys have some authority. Yeah.
Yeah.
I think it was such a beauty >> so different.
>> Yes.
>> That's the thing. It's the masters. They can be They all have personalities within their movements and characteristics.
>> And then they're surprised that they're called >> [laughter] >> Mr. and Mr. Grab Man. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
But they embrace it. Like fair enough.
Yeah.
They absolutely do. And and it would make sense, right? In this situation, what what starts to develop as the story unfolds. They are the masters, so of course they have leadership positions.
But you also have unique specific skills, right? So that's going to lend itself in different ways. When you guys stepped on to attorney for the first time, how did that feel for you guys?
>> You know, each set is meticulously handcrafted. Yeah.
Every mark on the ground is again intentional, like the costumes. So you are immediately and instantaneously transported to to another world. It's not green screen. We had a full set.
>> the thing that was surprising cuz a lot of things these days are CGI and green screen.
I'm I'm not saying we don't have it. Of course we have green screen, but they're in like way in the back. To fill out the void.
I think almost every sort of building or things you walk on, all that stuff, that's all real. They built all of that.
Some of the sculptures Well, how many we had all these studios?
We were in a studio lot in London.
What was like 12 studios that they had different sets, and then we had an outside one as as for the square.
>> Yes. And so yeah, I was expecting there to be a lot of green screen, but there was a little green screen. So stepping onto it again, this is where Richard and the team has made a journey of come to life. The cartoon is vividly alive in front of you and that was uh yeah, The guy who's the set designer is phenomenal. Phenomenal.
And I think >> Yeah, he they Richard and all of them really worked together on this. It's beautiful.
>> And I think I remember in between takes you'd have people running up and tweaking the the sculptures just a little bit here, a little bit there.
Okay, we good to go again. I thought, "Well, you know, everybody here cares."
That is the It was so wonderful to see.
>> Well, to the extent that you'd walk around the set and like maybe go look behind something, something that would never be seen on camera and it would still look great. That somebody spent a lot of time on that. Just in case they want to do an angle where you see that.
Because sometimes cuz these things cost a lot of money and maybe you want to sort of be sparse with what you have ready, but they really went out there with this.
>> no no expense. It was We went all out.
Yeah, I I think when I first stepped on I thought, "My gosh. My gosh." It was uh surreal. And then you realize actually I'm in costume as well. Right.
>> [laughter] >> I know we belong here.
Yeah, and and it and I asked that because that came across to me as well and to everyone else watching the film is that it felt you know, that those were practical stages that were built and intentionally designed and it it came across and it came through and I think that really helped to pull you in. Yeah.
And I imagine it did for you guys as well. Cuz as an audience you can feel well, maybe I shouldn't be mentioning other movies, but I will. You can cut it out if you want. But I remember watching with my oldest daughter who's now 17. I I watching the Star Wars prequels series. Who are famous for being heavily CGI. Of course George Lucas did groundbreaking stuff with all those movies. And he was And we were watching Phantom Menace I believe.
And they're walking and she she goes Are they outside or inside? Yeah. Cuz it was a green screen meant to be outside but obviously they're in a studio. And as an audience she was six years old and she could feel it. And I was Wow, that's a good question cuz both is kind of right. Yeah, yeah. So and it's a testimony to what you're saying about an audience can feel what they're watching. And this feels real cuz it is real.
To an extent. Of course we we're making up a journey as well with a lot of brilliant CGI artists as well. It felt and it made a difference. So you mentioned the people that were putting that stage together as well as the costume people. All of that came through to where as a fan it's exactly what you hoped for.
>> Yeah. You know, and it and it it really it paid off I think for you guys. A lot of the cast and crew were were fans and the producers were fans. And Travis is a fan. You can tell. It it is so strong in the film. When I went to his office to meet him for the first time I I was obviously nervous but you step in and there's memorabilia and action figures everywhere. Yeah. This guy's a fan.
Yeah. And just seeing the the enthusiasm and the love Yeah. and the passion it was like I he spoke so passionately about his vision for it. It was really inspiring.
>> so inspiring. Something I had hoped we were going to see was was Snake Mountain.
We never saw that in in the '87 film.
You know, we got in a really epic Gray Skull in the '87 film but we I think are rewarded I think fans will be excited to see Snake Mountain.
>> Yeah, the '87 film of course suffered for their They had limitations of course and especially with the ending fight with Skeletor and there's a whole people can dive into that. It's very interesting story but it has its charm but it definitely left you wanting more and now we're giving you more. Yeah, absolutely.
On the the fight choreography and things like that how how was that approaching the fight scenes for you guys and you know because again have special mechanics. That's true. Every character has his special style of fighting.
Obviously when you have a big metal fist on your right hand you're not going to use your left hand for much. Yeah. So a lot of my fighting is you know it's it's the right hook and the back hand and the uppercut. It's all focused around the right hand and then of course and he has my springy legs and my head butting and anything I use with my hands is to facilitate a head butt.
Training we had with the stunt department was was amazing. The stunt guys Liang Yang and Andy Lister legends in in stunts worldwide.
I come from a stunt background so it was such an honor to work with them and >> just see what they have bringing to life you know and okay let's what can we use with with our legs you know just springiness and and a lot of wire work and it was And you cuz you mentioned Liang if people don't know who he is he they should look him up cuz >> Yeah.
when I saw him that first cuz I didn't know [laughter] I just knew that I was coming in for my first stunt session for Masters and the night before I was in a hotel room in London and I was like I'm going to Google go to you I'll go on YouTube and look at like best fight sequences or whatever just look at some look at some choreography. Right. And the I think the top rated fight sequence of all time is from Mission Impossible I which one but it's in that white bathroom.
Oh, yeah.
>> Yeah, with Henry Cavill. Yeah, yeah.
>> And they're fighting this this guy.
Yeah. And I'm looking at it and I'm like, "Wow." And that guy is Li Yang.
No, really?
>> So, he choreographed it and he performed it as well.
And I'm looking at it like, "Oh my god, if we get anywhere near that, we're good." And then I show up the day after.
And he's right there. I'm like, "Oh my god, you're the" And I said I said to him, "You're the guy from the white bathroom." And he's like, "What?"
And then I had to explain what I meant.
So, he's like, "Yes. Yeah, let's get to work."
>> [laughter] >> Yeah.
>> with Li Yang on my very first job 47 Ronin 15, 16 years ago. And he was a phenomenal performer back then. And he still is. And it's it's sometimes when we were rehearsing, he would get into the rig to show how it was done.
>> Oh, interesting. Cuz he can still do it.
Yeah. When he shows you stuff, you're trying to do the moves and he comes and like, "Do it more like this." And like, "Wow." You just you then you spend the rest of your time trying to do it as well as he does. And to be fair, you don't ever get to that level, but trying will get you pretty far. Yeah, that that fight scene you mentioned, he he just won't go down Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's so much fun. Yeah. Yeah. And I like that about the level of fun violence. It was a nice surprise for me cuz obviously we knew what we were doing. We didn't know what other people were doing in their fight scenes. And I think it kicks off with early on in the film when they're jumping off the bridge. Mhm. Tila jumps off and then Adam jumps off.
>> Yeah. And he's not really good at it and it's just it's so brutal and it's so funny.
>> Yeah. Yeah, the funny fun violence that was a nice surprise for me. And I think when you've got fantasy characters uh, each other, the violence is super creative. It's so creative and it's like, "Oh!"
>> [laughter] >> And the filmation cartoons were subdued a bit, right? You know, a lot of throwing people into a mud puddle and stuff like that.
This one felt like there was real consequences to a fight.
>> Yes.
>> You know.
>> Yeah, yeah. Real consequences. It felt brutal, but fun. Kind of like, I mean, you see this stuff in Tarantino movies and I there's this clip of Tarantino where that somebody's asking him like, "Why does it have to be so violent?" And he says, "Because it's so much fun."
Yeah, absolutely.
>> that's what it is. It's so much fun.
It's play.
>> artists, they love it. They they love it, you know? It's it's And you've just got fans. You're just working with fans as as crew members and you know, you're just feeding off each other's other's energy. And then, especially last night being amongst cast, crew, fans, it was just electrifying.
Yeah, it was. It was special. It really was. I'm so glad I came out. You know, we've talked about the scene, the costumes, the fighting sequences, the dynamics of the characters, but it's all kind of brought together a lot of times through music as well.
And this this soundtrack really nailed it, I felt like.
It it, you know, nodded towards familiar music and it gave the right tone to the film. When you guys did you hear the whole thing for the first time last night? Or had you >> the first time, yeah.
>> That's one thing when you're filming stuff, you have no idea what they're going to do music-wise, the score.
And that that that little theme they have running all through the film, the one that starts the film and it's the heroic theme, it's so good.
>> Yeah. Uh, yeah, the the the I heard it for the first time yesterday, loved it.
Yeah. It gave me goosebumps. Absolutely.
Because I think when we're filming, we might deliver lines in a serious manner, but with the music it I was actually this is really funny. Right. Yeah.
[laughter] Yeah.
>> Yeah, I think they nailed it on the music.
>> really did. Yeah. Yeah.
So, quick just fun question on the music topic.
What was your first album that each of you bought with your own money? For me it was R.E.M. Automatic for the People.
1993. Oh gosh.
So I guess I was 13. I hadn't [laughter] bought it yet. My mom had bought my previous albums. Was it cassette or CD?
Uh that was CD. Okay. Yeah, I had the yellow cassette of R.E.M. Oh did you?
Yeah. It was a transparent yellow. I was 13 and I mean there's so many good tracks on that. Yeah. I was a bit heartbroken. Mhm. Yeah. This is girl that I won't [laughter] mention.
But Everybody Hurts is on that album. I would lay in my bed crying listening to that over and over and over again. I think you and I are the same age. I think a lot of us have I'm born in '80 or '81? '81. Yeah, cuz you said you were six when you saw the movie.
>> Yeah, yeah. Yeah. So, and your first album? The Lion King soundtrack. Yes.
Good one. So good. So good. I would fall asleep listening to it and then ah wonderful. Really, really wonderful.
>> Absolutely wonderful.
Born in '88 so I'm a little bit behind.
Yeah.
Different time. Absolutely.
Well, they had The New Adventures of He-Man.
When you were Yes.
>> that was a short-lived uh but uh much beloved run.
Well, thank you uh for you know joining us for this uh conversation. I did appreciate the both of you guys uh making the time.
>> Thank you very much.
>> [music] >> Woo!
