Is This the Right Material for a Luxury Retreat?

[00:00:00]We're building a 1,000 square meter luxury retreat on the South Coast. And now, the biggest problem with that is how do you actually make it feel high-end on the inside? So, we've reached out to the team at Set in Steel after seeing some of their products on Instagram, have started working closely with them to build all the concrete items. The majority of our stuff will now be concrete. We've got things like the hearth or the bench that the fireplace sits on, that will be made out of concrete. We've opted to have all our sinks made out of concrete as well in our bathrooms. And then from there, in the main pavilion, we have the bench where the fireplace will one of the fireplaces will sit. All of this is being made out of concrete. So, you can imagine, there's a lot of work here. And one thing we did try to do is avoid concrete that needed to be poured on site. That adds additional cost because the team have to bring all their tools, do the work on site. So, we were really careful to kind of trim back to a point where we could actually just get it all manufactured in their warehouse. So, then then it can just be brought to [music] site and then just installed very quickly. It reduces the cost and you end up with a product that they can really finish nicely cuz they have all the tools and they have all [music] the material right there to get it done. So, let's jump in and have a look at what the team and Jared have to say. What happens in here? We've got our forming area, so the boys work out of here. We either use the saw if we can just cut straight panels. We've got the CNC over the back there. Once it's all formed up here, then it goes through the workshop to the pouring area, then outside to get wet polished, and then back up here, and this is sort of a clean zone where it gets all sealed and makes it look pretty.

[00:01:40]>> [music] >> So, this is how we get all our pedestal molds. So, there'll be a sink mold that gets put [music] in here, sort of like this one. The top up there, and then this will be on the ground, and then you'll get whatever shape. So, that's a rectangle one. [music] This is a more oval shape, and then this is just a soft rounded one.

[00:02:01]>> [music] >> This is the tabletop over here.

[00:02:07]And it's got that bullnose on the bottom side. And then this is going to be the base [music] once this flips over. So that's one of the layers. So we cut it in layers and then like smooth coat [music] this, and then that's what we use as the mold.

[00:02:24]>> [music] >> So we've got all of these discs, and then these are also our rubber molds for our basins. So any of our standard basins we've got rubber molds that we can replicate. [music] We can basically do any shape. This is we're starting to build up our showroom, so we're going to start casting some of these. We obviously cast the pieces, and then we'll take it out and wet polish it.

[00:02:48]That'll sometimes open up some little pores in the concrete. Then we'll do a full smear grout so that any little pinhole gets filled with the color match grout, and then we'll take it back out and wet polish it again. Then it gets acid washed, and then that we acid wash it so that the sealer bonds to the surface [music] a lot better.

[00:03:11]So this is one of our hand press finishes. So this is in our linen color.

[00:03:15]This one's just the raw finish. Then inside we've got the hand press with the grout. So yeah, that's [music] a different option.

[00:03:25]This is for a sign. Um so we've [music] got a decal that's um matching up with a Corten steel. So this has the same decal, so it'll transfer through the concrete.

[00:03:35]>> [music] >> So we just finished up with Jared from Seton Steel and had a walk through the workshop. The point of the meeting today was to decide on colors, which is really difficult because they can literally make any color that you can imagine. So what does that do? Just creates more choice, which means uh it's harder to do. But luckily, we have refined it down to three colors. So, that's really exciting for us to actually see it all come. We're trying to just like lock it in, make decisions cuz we have a couple of weeks before they start pouring the pieces. But we walked through and just saw the different finishes, how they make the different items. And man, it's such a cool thing to see, isn't it?

[00:04:09]>> scientists. They mix all these certain colors to get a whole new color.

[00:04:13]>> And then they're different finishes, too. So, you can have a trowel finish, you can have a >> hand pressed finish.

[00:04:17]>> pressed, the poured finish, like with spray on finish, like I don't even like we don't even know all the different options. But it is so cool. So, highly recommend checking these guys out if you are doing any concrete pieces. And like price comparison versus like a manufactured stone, I guess like Caesarstone or something like that, it's very similar. And I think the >> more options with concrete, I think.

[00:04:35]>> And and you get bigger pieces. So, like you can do big runs with no joins.

[00:04:38]>> No joins. And it's unique. It's custom.

[00:04:40]It's not There's not like a just coming out of factory.

[00:04:42]>> one-off pieces and your color will be custom. Cuz I don't know if it'll age.

[00:04:46]As long as you don't go the blue. We did see some great some crazy colors in there. So, don't choose those and you'll be sweet. So, very very productive morning. Lots of fun. So, now we're going to head off back to the farm and go and check out the pieces against some of the polished floor and see how it works there. But I think we're very close to locking this all in.

[00:05:07]>> [music] >> Here you can see Sim and I actually coming straight after the meeting at Ten Steel with samples of the color, which I think so important. Try and get as big samples as you can. The team here are really cool cuz they can actually be building us big color samples so we can test them in situ or in place. And you can see us Sim and I testing it against the brick, testing it against the polished concrete to make sure that these things work together. You don't want them to stand out. And you can see Sim's pumped about it, super happy to see these colors just working [music] so well together. It's just such a hard choice cuz there are so many options. In the end of the day, we're very very happy with what it's going to look like.
